Surgery Cancelled Due to High Blood Pressure

Recommended Posts

My doctor has referred me to a cardiologist which I will see on June 5th. It was actually the anesthesiologist who refused. I was also told that if my blood pressure was high the day of surgery then the facility would turn me away as well. Everything had been good up until Wednesday before last when I went in for my pre-op appointment. My blood pressure was always in that borderline stage, but nothing quite as high as 164/108. I am baffled why it got so high.

Ok, that makes more sense. Anesthesiologists don't generally meet their patients until the day of surgery so they (understandably) tend to be more conservative in signing off on stuff like this. The BP could have been high from nerves/stress - the days and weeks leading up to a major surgery are enough to make anyone's BP spike! Glad you'll be seeing a cardiologist though. I'm sure they'll get things sorted out for you quickly. I know it probably feels like a set back but keep your head in the game and surgery will be here before you know it [emoji4]

Check the sodium in your shakes - were you on preop diet? broth?

Thank all of you. I will avoid high sodium foods and caffeine; anything to get back on track.

The day that I started my pre-op was the same day my doctor checked my bp, so I didn't officially start the pre-op until the next day.

No deli meat, canned Soups, processed food - try to stick to cooked chicken, grilled meat, veggies, skim milk, oatmeal, blueberries, yogurt (if you tolerate milk). Use Mrs. Dash for seasoning and garlic.....

Take one magnesium at night.

I had peak BP of 170s/115, and thats on only first line treatment of only metoprolol and HCTZ (hydro, Water pill). After many dietary changes 3 months later my BP was regularly 100-120/65-90 before surgery, my latest post-op and off HCTZ (only taking metoprolol) was 103/81.

If you're on amlodopine that's generally a second line treatment (for more advanced hypertension issues), and if your BP is spiking that high on second line treatment, something is wrong.. and you're very high risk of stroke or heart attack unless it gets under control quickly.

This is generally diet induced. Stay away from dense carb foods and liquids. Talk to a nutritionist or RD and get into better habits immediately.

Blood pressure spikes quite a bit during surgery. If your BP is uncontrolled as it seems now, the surgeon likely sees you as too much of a risk.

I take lisinipril and hydrochlorothiazide it's good and protects ur kidneys....too long with high blood pressure can hurt the kidneys and then its dialysis....stay away from too much sodium drink lots of Water and more water. Practice some stress relieving techniques like meditation. Just my 2 cents [emoji179]

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
