Fluid and protein intake

Recommended Posts

First post. I had my sleeve surgery on March 27th, 2017. Pre weight loss was around 35 pounds which I was trying to lose on my own. Not many problems with the surgery. Anesthesia threw me for a loop. No pain other than gas pain under shoulder blade. My question to you guys is this. I am having trouble getting the required liquids and Protein in. I am getting maybe 30 oz of liquid versus 60 to 90 required by my bariatric center. protein is around 2 to 3 oz. Just looking for some suggestions or to see if anyone has the same problem. By the way, down 71.6 pounds since may 16th, 2016.

I am 12 days post op. I think you are doing fairly well. I have just hit my Protein and fluid goals this week, I think 10 days post op. It takes some time and healing to work your way up to the amounts on your plan. Just keep sipping and you will get there.

That's so good to hear... I'm 9 days post op and still haven't got to 64 ounces (I'm getting about half). I fill like I'm stuffing my tummy and still not getting close to the goal. There's hope lol

Doing great! Remember you can count the Protein Shakes as Fluid as well so 32 oz so far. Halfway there!!! I highly recommend working towards more Protein. You need that to heal. That early out it was an all day chore to sip, sip, sip. My husband bought me a special insulated cup and it has been in my hand all day since surgery. This should become a lifelong habit. Also, for the first two weeks I just couldn't drink cold things. Room temp Water and shakes were all my tummy could handle. You're something big great. No worries. It just keeps getting better from here!

Take care.

I was the same way. Room temp or warm/hot was what my stomach could handle. Tomorrow will be two weeks post op and it is getting better.

You are doing fine. I think as long as you don't over do it with exercise, and keep increasing your levels each day you will be good. I do have more energy now that I am hitting 65g of Protein.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
