Taking Medications

Recommended Posts

I currently take Zocor (cholesterol) and Metformin (diabetes).

Will I be able to take my medication once I have had the surgery?

My doctor did not even address it with me (although it was on my forms), and this really concerns me.

I take lipitor (cholesterol) which is very tiny and easy to swallow, so that was not a problem. I was told not to crush or cut the metformin, and due to its size I could not swallow it. I used my glucometer to check my blood, and low and behold my readings are always in the normal range. I have completely discontinued the metformin.

Please call you doctor and follow his/her advice

Metformin comes in short acting (okay to crush) and long acting (not okay to crush). Zocor should be okay but I'm not 100% positive without looking it up. ALWAYS talk to your RPh before crushing or breaking a tablet. If it is extended release it is designed to be taken less often and it is absorbed differently. If you break it in half you'll get potentially an entire day's worth of drug in one shot. Not a great thing to happen. ;)

Check with your diabetes doctor about the metformin. I had to discontinue it 2 days prior to surgery as it interferes with the anesthesia....I had to do this with previous surgeries also.

My diabetes doctor said not to take it post-op and see him 4 weeks after surgery. I had surgery 2 weeks ago, have lost 22 lbs and my blood sugar levels are normal ! Still have 3 other diabetes meds to get off, but this is a start. Am closely monitoring 4 times a day...making sure it doesn't go too low now,

Again, contact your doctor. Also during my pre-op meeting with the surgeon, they also wanted me to stop prior to surgery.....

Good luck !

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
