Advice on Vitamins

Recommended Posts

My surgical group strongly recommends taking Vitamins for the rest of my life. Conceptually this is a great thing but I have a problem with taking Vitamins without the band, I cannot imagine how I will tolerate them with the band. They are recommending:

2 chewable Multi Vitamins and minerals a day

1 sublingual B-12 per day 500-1000mcg

1200mg of Calcium Citrate

I think I am going to have to get liquid vitamins given my tolerance history of taking vitamins in pill form.

Any advise out there about what vitamins are good?

I use Centrum chewable multi vitamins, and Caltrate chewable Calcium.< /p>

A "sublingual" B-12 means that it will dissolve under your tongue.

All of these are pretty much the equivalent of liquid vitamins. A chewable or dissolvable Vitamin turns into liquid, more or less, before you swallow it. chewables are much easier to get down than pills. So basically I think you will find that the items on your list are no problem.

If you ever decide to add an Omega-3 supplement, I might recommend Coromega brand Chocolate/Orange flavor squeeze pouches. Very tasty and easy to take. Check out vitacost.com for good price on 90 day supply.

Is that the fish oil stuff in a pudding like substance?

I was at Hi Health a few weeks ago and they added some samples of that to my bag. I tried, I just couldn't get beyond the idea of "fish pudding" and I pitched them. Blech...

chewable vitamins are just that.. chewable.. I don't understand why you have a hard time taking them? Unless you hate the taste so bad or something??

They do have liquid forms someone else might know a good brand, but with the band you can still take chewable Vitamins.< /p>

I don't take b-12..

But I take flinstone multi-vitamins, and tums ultra 1000 for my Calcium (800mg per tablet).

I ditto the Centrum Complete orange-flavored chewable Vitamins. chewable vitamins taste a heck of a lot better than liquid Vitamin, IMO. Just the smell of the liquid is almost enough to make me gag.

And a word of wisdom: If you start taking calcium citrate, make sure you buy the chewable calcium citrate. Otherwise, they are mega-pills. I have an entire bottle that I'm having to split because I forgot to get chewables.< /p>

I shop at Buy Discount Vitamins, supplements, Low Carb and More at www.Vitacost.com and have found some great stuff! Nature's Plus makes a very good-for-you liquid Vitamin and mineral supplement with tropical flavor. Compared to other liquid supplements, it tastes good, but is a Vitamin. It is a high quality, well absorbed, vitamin/mineral complex. Flinstone/Centrum type products are like comparing bleached white bread to a hearty multi-grain product~incomparible health wise.

I also bought Nature's Plus chewable Calcium hearts, which are GOOD! Kind of a malt flavor. I also bought their Vit C and Zinc, all chewable. They ship any number of products for around five bucks.

good luck!

This stuff may be "fish pudding" in a sense, but the point is, it doesn't taste like that at all. No fish taste or aftertaste whatsoever. The chocolate orange ones actually taste quite good. And, from what I'm told, they offer much better Omega-3 absorption compared to other sources like gel caps.

I'm pre-band and am taking a prescription dose of Vitamin D. I am on it indefinitely, ever since my deficiency was discovered through tests for the lap-band procedure.

It's a relatively small gel-tab pill, but I wonder if it will go down after I'm banded. It seems so smooth, I'd think it would slip through. Unlike regular pills, I don't think it can be crushed without losing a lot of the liquid inside. Does anyone have any advice?

I wonder why they recommend TWO Vitamins per day, plus extra B-12? This sounds like a dosage for Bypass patients, to allow for of their malabsorption issues.

My doctor just told me to take a chewable/liquid daily Vitamin, plus Calcium.< /p>

I take two childrens gummi bear Vitamins from the suggestion from my surgeon . Yummy gummi.

edie

I was doing this too untill someone on here told me they dont have any minerals in them. Now, I dont know much about Vitamins so I would guess taking minerals is better for you? I dunno. There are so many opinions on vitamins its a bit overwhelming. I do like the way the gummi's taste though!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
