Gastric bypass or sleeve? How did you choose? Anyone 5 years out of surgery?

Recommended Posts

I did a lot of research and based on the fact that gastric bypass is still the gold standard and the fact that I didn't want to end up with reflux, I chose RNY. I don't really have reflux but every once in a while I get it. I didn't want to have to worry about that. My surgery is June 26!!

I just met with my surgeon for the first time this week. I went in almost positive I'd do the sleeve, but left with a date (Aug 4!!) and a decision to do RNY. Why? The reflux issue and because it has a higher and longer success rate. My motivating factor for the surgery is a deteriorative disease of my heel and achilles tendons. Significant weight loss will be the only way to manage a problem that can't be cured. I want to make sure it works. I'm lucky to have a surgeon who didn't pressure me, but gave a very reasoned recommendation. I'm still freaked out about surgery in general, but happy with my decision so far.

I decided to go with Gastric Bypass because I did more research on it and trusted that more than the sleeve. I wanted something that would keep me in check with my junk food problem. Then there's the fact that my surgeon recommended Gastric Bypass over the sleeve. I followed her recommendation because I believe I was in good hands... And because I want to be as healthy as I can be.

Thanks everyone including OP I'm have surgery in 9 days and haven't decided on what procedure, this really helped me. I'm just afraid of dumping lol seeing that I'm in a wheelchair, wouldn't want to run someone over to get to the bathroom

I decided to have the sleeve because I didn't like the idea of re-routing my stomach. I wanted to maintain my regular digestive tract. I didn't want to worry about a lifetime of Vitamins and nutrient deficiency. I've kown people with the sleeve and with gb who have gained weight, so I just went with what was comfortable to me. Good luck.

How's healing going for you? Did you have to take 6 weeks off work?

Thanks for asking this question, been struggling with this too. I was recommended bypass because of GERD, but having a hard time wrapping my head around the malabsorption. Especially since near term (with 1-2 years) I'd be looking to get pregnant and it would be my first. Anyone with experience there?

Same here. My end results to getting healthy is starting a family. I heard you can still get pregnant after you let your body heal.

Wow that's good to know. Aug 4th will be here before you know it. Do you still have to do the 2 week liquid diet?

I healed just fine. [emoji846]
It's just this nausea that's bothering me. I didn't have a job after I got the surgery. I will after I feel normal again.

Dumping only happens if eating foods too high in sugar...if you watch your diet you might not dump at all. Having said that sometimes foods are higher in sugar are not apparent especially at the early stages...I dumped once from cocktail sauce with shrimp - the sauce is high in sugar. Also sucralose can cause dumping but going on 2 years now and I don't dump even when eating foods high in sugar and sucralose. I just do

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
