Gastric bypass or sleeve? How did you choose? Anyone 5 years out of surgery?

Recommended Posts

I went into my nutritionist office through my dr, and she doesn't recommend the sleeve for me. How did you choose? I have an appointment with the bariatric team, and see what they say. She said for long term gastric is the way to go.

Some doctors prefer the bypass if your starting weight is higher, because you are going to lose a little bit more.

I chose the sleeve because I wasn't interested in rerouting my pipes. To me it seems less invasive, has less risk of things like food intolerances (good or bad depending on your view!), and the idea of malnutrition to that extent freaks me out.

Keep in mind I am only 10 months out. Purely anecdotally, I have found it interesting that the people I know with the most regain had the bypass.

Regardless, don't let them pressure you into something you don't want. If you want the sleeve, do that! It's also possible to go from sleeve to bypass down the road if needed.

Bypass and sleeve are both good choices. But they are also just tools. If you don't change your lifestyle you will gain the weight back no matter which surgery you choose. The weight doesn't just come back by itself. My surgeon recommended the sleeve for me, less complications and bypass is bad if you want kids in the future.

I am almost 5 years out. Thought my maintenance set point waa 160# and that is where I stayed for about 2 years. Then in January of this year I started dropping weight to my current 140#. Have not changed my eating habits so guess my body decides on a lower set point.

I had the sleeve as I did not want to deal with the low absorption, all the Vitamins, and having my plumbing rerouted. I have lost a total of 150#.

Me too and I have decided that the reason I know more bypass regains is because it was the more common surgery for weight loss compared to the sleeve. I'm pretty sure that long term results are similar for these surgeries. Both are good but I chose the sleeve.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
