patroche121 1 Posted May 22, 2017 I see my surgeon next week and I am not sure whether to have the sleeve or bypass surgery. Please tell me the pros and cons of both.
blondie66 271 Posted May 22, 2017 It depends on how much u have to lose. If under 100 pounds I'd do the sleeve if over I'd go with bypass. I had bypass and it's been very helpful in reaching my goals. If you're child bearing age and plan to have a child I'd do a sleeve. I find sleeve you lose quickly but it's much easier to gain back as it doesn't appear to change your blood sugar levels like RNY gastric bypass. If you're diabetic do the RNY. There are many variables. Best to discuss with your surgeon. I initially wanted the sleeve but my surgeon said you're very big so better to do the bypass. I've reached a healthy bmi and feel amazing but I take my Vitamins and have my Protein daily.
Airstream88 361 Posted May 22, 2017 Agree with blondie66. I originally wanted the sleeve but ended up getting the bypass. My surgeon recommended Bypass due to the amount I had to lose, but left it up to me. After reading hundreds of peoples experiences with both, I decided the Bypass was the best option after all. I wanted 1 operation, I didn't want to have to worry about developing GERD, I wanted the restriction on sugar and fat, and I didn't mind having to take Vitamins and supplements for the rest of my life. My pre-diabetes and blood pressure are now normal (Blood sugar almost immediately). 1 blondie66 reacted to this
NoMoBand 278 Posted May 22, 2017 Do you currently have issues with heartburn? Do you take NSAIDs (ibuprophen, aleve, diclofenac etc)? If you suffer from any kind of heart burn now, there's a greater chance that sleeve will make it worse. I you take NSAIDs on a regular basis, the sleeve is for you because you are not dealing with such a small pouch as you do with bypass and is safer with sleeve. Airstream88 361 Posted May 22, 2017 I took 2400g of Ibuprofen daily and the the largest does of Meloxicam for my knees prior to the Bypass. My surgeon said that once the weight was off, if I still had issues they would prescribe a non-NSAID. I have lost 120 pounds and I haven't had to take anything but Extra Strength Tylenol for my knees. Just losing the weight helped my back and knees immensely. 3 NoMoBand, catwoman7 and blondie66 reacted to this
