Month 5 pre-op with my PCP on Monday, realizing that month

You are not alone! Just had my 5 month appt last Tuesday. Came out of there feeling like I really need to get serious practicing all the things that I need to be posing after surgery.

Yeah...my last weigh in was really depressing. My doctor showed me the graph and I almost immediately lost all of the weight the surgeon wanted me to lose...and then Ive been in the neighborhood of the same 5 pounds for the past 4 months..and she told me if Im not careful the same thing wi happen after surgery, I will lose alot of weight in the honeymoon phase and then level off and be stuck. That was really scary.

I will say I'm glad I took my pre op. visits seriously. I've had absolutely no problems post op. My team of docs insists it's because I followed instructions to the letter before and after my roux-en-y. The hospital nurses even chuckled at me cause I packed my own shot glass to take sips of Water out of in hospital...they had medicine cups for me....said most people don't really practice sipping before surgery. I still shake my head when I think about those in my group who continually reported they hadn't started that yet...when asked the Myriad of questions each month. Each of them had numerous complications of various degress...I felt bad for them but knew they had not truly taken the pe-op. lessons to heart . That said it's never to late to start getting ready. You can do a lot in a month. I believe I heard most habits take a month to break so I would think a month of practice is better than no practice at all. It's tough to make these lifestyle changes. But even those in my group who had issues would not have changed the decision to have surgery.

Purchase all your Vitamins and organize them and write up a schedule to take them. I also bought a honkin' pill holder. I didn't practice sipping and I've had no issues. Gulp once and your stomach will let you know. I also didn't practice chewing. I have five weeks till I can chew and figured I'd be out of the habit anyway. I did buy tiny plates and baby spoons for the time. I use the spoons with my yogurt now. When you're home and on the liquid phase you'll have plenty of time to read what your food phases will be. Oh, do get a digital food scale of you don't have one. You'll both be just fine.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
