2 days post op, cannot drink

Recommended Posts

So I had my VSG Thursday morning. I have found i can't drink anything without significant pain. However, if I use a small spoon to get my liquid in (protein shake, broth, even water) I do just fine.
Could I be taking in to much air when drinking from a cup?

You need to sip from a glass/cup, not take a drink. At this point in your recovery it's tiny tiny sips.

I get to start full liquids tomorrow as I will be day 4 post op. Have a couple of homemade pudding cups made up of SF Jello pudding cheesecake flavor. It smelled so good. Also kinda looking forward to drinking my Protein Shakes again. I have had almost no Protein since surgery. Took all I could muster to choke down the Vitamin mix today for the first time.

Yes... small sips. I usually sip & hold the liquid in my mouth and slowly swallow the liquid. Otherwise I get severe chest pain & burp. I am POD 4

I am 3 days post op and was given little 30 ml cups to sip from. I'm supppsed to take 3 sips to finish each one so that's a very tiny sip at a time.

I had terrible pain the day after surgery once I started sipping. It felt like every sip even the smallest would bounce on a ball and then work its way down. I just had a ton of gas right under my sernum. It gets better!

It's not just you! I'm day 5 post op, and it is slowly getting better, but I was super worried when I first got home because in order to not have pain, I was drinking so slooooowly I got nowhere near the amount I was supposed to. Some people on this board helped me keep it in perspective-- everyone seems to go through it, just be gentle with yourself and sip tiny amounts as you can. As your tummy heals and the swelling goes down, and as the gas goes away, you will get more in each day without so much pain. Hang in there!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
