Hi all, just curious if any of you knew the reason we can't drink carbonated beverages. Is it because it will harm our new stomachs or for fullness reasons? My bachelorette party is today and the doctor OK-ed me to have some wine, but my mom bought this really nice champagne that I would like to try. Thanks in advance for your help :)

I think it may have something to fo with stretching... the bubbles will do it, you know? I would check with my doctor though to be sure.

If you are beyond the initial six to eight week healing period, one glass of champagne to Celebrate your bachelorette party will not do a lot of harm. You may find, however, you do not like how it makes you feel.

I tried a small portion of champagne on an international first class flight (small airplane glass, maybe 1/4 of it) at 3 months post-op, and I thought that I was going to throw up in a bag about 20 minutes later. I have flown extensively for over 10 years, and it was the first time I really thought that I was going to puke on a plane. (We had hit some bad turbulence and they wouldn't let us get up -- even in first class!) It ended up that I was miserable for about 30 minutes, and then let out huge burp, and then was fine, but 7.5 months post-op, I still avoid carbonation because of that experience.

I'll be 9 months out and still haven't tried carbonated drinks I'm to scared. I had a bad case of acid reflux after I have sleeve surgery and scared to have anything like that. I know some people do have carbonated drinks and they are fine though.

On a flight it will be even worse due to cabin pressure.

Carbonation promotes gastric pressure, which can lead to heartburn/acid reflux. As well, carbonated beverages can increase stomach acid production.

My physicians recommend no carbonated beverages for life so that's now part of my new lifestyle, along with no alcohol or coffee.

I avoid carbonated drinks. My program says none for life. I understand that for a lot of WLS people that carbonated drinks are a gateway to really bad choices and weight gain. My surgeon said it could cause acid reflux and stretching of new tummy.

I watched lady on yt who is 4 or 5 years out and she drank soda everyday and stretched her stomach out and had umbelical hernia and now has to have rny to correct the weight issues. I'm sure one small cup won't hurt but I wouldn't make it a habit, gl.

My doctor said after 6 months if I have no discomfort I can have carbonated Water again. I was a big seltzer drinker and need something other than plain water so I'm excited to try. I'm not a fan of artificial sweeteners so it's been unsweet tea and water since surgery. My doctor said with the sleeve stretching is not an issue and even with bypass you would have to drink an inhuman amount. He said it's more about possible discomfort as well as the possibility of it being a gateway to things like soda.

My experience with carbonated beverages: I can take a sip of my fiancé's soda & be fine. I even had 4 oz of a root beer float. Both occasions I was fine because my stomach was empty.

One time after I ate, I had a sip of my fiancé's soda & I ran to the bathroom & threw up. The carbonation made the food come up for whatever reason.

So, for me, carbonation is okay with an empty stomach. But I don't consume much just 2 to 4 Fluid oz.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
