Realistic weightloss question for 208lb start.

Recommended Posts

I am 3 months out and have lost 58lbs. I started at 234 in a size 20. Today I'm 176 and a loose 18 but for the life of me I can't get into a 16. All the loose skin around my lower belly won't allow it

Hello all,

I am scheduled for 5/31 and I am getting married in October. My current weight is 208 (I have a heart condition and PCOS, so I qualified for surgery). I'm wondering how much weight someone at my size can lose in the 4 months after surgery. I'm concerned about having my dress taken in and whether or not it will fit for the wedding so any input from someone who started around my size would be so greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

I was at 209lbs the day of surgery, march 23,2017.... I weigh 188 lbs today. I'm 5'10". The weight seems to come off me in spurts, I feel exhausted for a few days then loose 3 pounds, then nothing for 7-10 days ...or more

Congrats on your upcoming surgery and wedding!

FYI - Starvation Mode is a myth. As long as you create a caloric deficit, then you will lose weight. Even if your metabolic rate slows down over prolonged time (adaptive thermogenesis), it will not be significant enough to actually STOP weight loss, nor is it significant enough to cause weight gain. It's mostly just enough to slow down progress a little bit over time. A much bigger factor slowing down weight loss progress over time is the fact that you've already lost a bunch of weight, so your body just isn't burning as many calories as it was initially.

Again, it has nothing at all to do with "I'm eating too little and my weight loss stopped." Many studies have been done that supports this.

^ thank you. Last time I said starvation mode was a myth, I got all sorts of interesting replies. lol. My thought, if starvation mode is real, why are people in third world countries dying from starvation? Or how can anorexics be so thin. If it were real, then what little those people would eat would turn to fat and make them gain. (Extreme example)

Prior to surgery I ate about 4000 calories a day. My weight held pretty steady, and I didn't exercise.

My neighbor eats 1200 calories a day and exercises all the time. Her weight also holds steady.

Bodies learn to cope with what they are given. They always strive for homeostasis despite the conditions. If the opportunity arises, the body will put on fat reserves, especially if it ever experienced a time that it didn't have enough.

The anorexic will eventually starve to death. The body will live on 300 calories a day as long as possible, but eventually the stores run out. Let's say an anorexic's body can live on 800 calories indefinitely. The minute they eat 900 calories, their body WILL store the extra... and if their metabolism stays at the 800 calorie level, they could even become fat eating 900 calories! (It would take a while).

There are some mystery mechanisms..like how eating more will help the body release its fat stores sometimes, but pack on the weight other times. Hmmm. food for thought...

I weighed 218 pounds on surgery day. I weighed 177 pounds on my 4th month post-op anniversary, so I had lost 41 pounds at 4 months out.

I should mention that I had hypothyroidism and insulin resistance, two health issues that negatively affect the metabolic rate.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
