hi guys me and my mum were banded on thursday, my mum had complications and had to have her spleen removed, she had scar tissue and it was nipped and then the surgen spent 2 hours tring to stop the bleeding.but sadly had to remove it in the end. i am so worried she looks terrible. she has just come out of intensive care and back to her private room. but what now. whats life like with out her spleen. and i was the one who talked her to have it done with me, "new life for us both etc..." what have i done, i am fine i feel like i have pulled a muscle on my left side, but thats all.

Nurse--I'm so sorry to hear that things did not go smoothly for your mom. I'm sure it was hard to see her look so badly, but it's good that you guys were in a hospital instead of an out-patient center! She'll look a lot better every day, and you'll start to feel better too. From a mom's perspective I can tell you that I would still be happy for my daughter, even though it didn't work for me. I would be glad that I was the one with complicatons and not her. I would tell her that there is nothing to feel guilty about--I make my own decisions--she didn't talk me into anything I didn't want to do. I would be happy because I have such a loving and caring daughter who wanted to share her journey with me in such a personal way, and that we have this kind of relationship.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
