Have a question. I had a severe stomach virus with lots of vomiting. Was admitted to hospital for dehydration, pain in my stomach and unable to keep anything down. Had a CT scan that showed colitis and my Bariatric surgeon said that from the severe vomiting for so long my sleeve has slipped above my diaphragm into my hiatal hernia. I am scheduled for a swallow series this morning to make sure fluids can still pass through my sleeve. Fingers crossed. Was wondering if anyone else had their sleeve "slip" and what approach did you and your surgeon take to correct it?? I am a few weeks shy of three years post op. Have never had any complications up to now. Thanks everyone!!!

When are they going to fix the hernia?

I hope you are better soon.

Late term complications terrify me.

Did you have this hernia or before the sleeve?

I did not have a hernia or reflux before my sleeve. It developed at about 2 years. However, my reflux is controlled by daily protonix.
My surgeon said that he usually converts to a gastric bypass if the acid and the hernia is bad enough. However, he said as long as I can keep food down and don't have anymore problems we will just keep an eye on it. He doesn't want to do a gastric bypass on me because he said he is worried I will lose weight and I was already at a normal BMI and then lost about 10 lbs with this stomach virus and colitis that I got from it. He want me to regain the 10 lbs I lost. He said if I have any problems he would prefer to fix the hernia.
I think now that the stomach virus is under control and I am getting antibiotics to treat the infection I should be on the mend!! Fingers crossed. Kinda looking forward to the fun of gaining my 10lbs back!! Haha
Late complications worry me too. Especially when we all take such good care of ourselves.

Yes scares me to death also! Sheesh. We can only do best we can. I try to remember that people have had this done for many many years! Only think that comforts me.

Be aware that taking PPIs (e.g. Protonix, Prilosec) long-term may have risks, such as osteoporosis or dementia. That's the reason I did not have a gastric sleeve because it has a high complication rate of acid reflux.

I had no idea about the gerd or anything, I would have done something reversible like lap and if I had enough known, but what's done is done

Lap band is really terrible. My surgeon doesn't even do those anymore but they do remove many a year. SOOOOO many people have complications from it. I had it in 2008 and had so many issues with it. I had to get it removed in 2012. I am MUCH MUCH happier with the sleeve. Even with all the complications I had in the first 6 months of my surgery it is 1000% better than Lap band.

I'm glad you are getting it under control! I hope you feel better! It is scary when things can go wrong even many years after the initial surgery. I'm definitely nervous about having down the line complications.

Have fun gaining those 10 pounds back though! [emoji6] haha

And that was why I choose sleeve , I was researching band for while. I picked my best option& am happy. I heard of people getting gerd with bypass also, even people without wls get it

I've read scientific research that indicates 10% of Sleeve patients that don't have GERD prior to surgery develop the disorder afterward, whereas that is not the case for Gastric Bypass. One of the reasons is because VSG lowers LES pressure and shortens abdominal length of esophagus.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
