I'm so glad I found this forum!! I am joining the sleeve club June 20th. I have been reading about people experiencing a lot of hunger after surgery. Isn't the sleeve supposed to remove or at least reduce hunger? My hubby had a gastric bypass 3 years ago and I he is just now starting to say he feels hungry. Just wondering how many veteran sleevers felt hungry after surgery?

"after surgery"

"3 years"

There's no permanent reduction to the feeling of hunger. That's based on a number of factors, such as how much of the fundus was removed (that affect ghrelin), the types of food you eat, etc.

That's why it's pivotal to get into good habits when you have the restriction.. the restriction gives way and it becomes 100% up to your habits. If they don't change, the surgery is useless.

Does he chart? Track his calories? Protein? Carbs? What does he eat?

I have never not felt hungry, I just make sure to choose proper food to eat. It is easier to ignore the hunger now, but then again I am only 3 months post-op.

I rarely feel hunger, acid can mimic hunger. I forget to eat often because I don't feel hunger. My body has changed significantly, preop I felt hunger all day long & constantly thought of food .

It's not a sure thing. I had a sleeve and DO get hungry. Sometimes it's fake hunger with excess acid when I forget to take my pantoloc, yes, but then there are times when I'm 3 hours past my last time eating and I am genuinely HUNGRY. there's also head hunger when I see a commercial for a cheeseburger and it's all I can think about.

But am I LESS hungry than before? yes absolutely. there are days I don't think about eating at all. and even if I do get hungry, my hunger is satisfied with less food.

Ultimately the sleeve is only a tool. You will always have to exercise your will power and good sense about when and how you eat.

I can fully attest to the acid mimicking hunger issue. In fact, you can find on these forums a panicked post of me thinking I destroyed my sleeve by drinking pineapple juice and causing me to feel hungry (good grief - I was a mess!)

If you feel hungry, make sure (1) you remembered to take your acid reducers/blockers and (2) you're aware of any foods you may be consuming that cause you to produce extra acid.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
