Surgery in late afternoon?

Recommended Posts

So I just got a time for my surgery on May 22nd. 3:50PM!! I can't believe it's so late. I'm not very happy about that. I'm also kind of worried. There's no way I can go 16 hours without at least drinking something. I'll be completely parched. They must be crazy!

Did anyone else have a late surgery and survive?

It is not that hard. I did not check into the hospital until Noon, and I think my surgery was at like 2 pm or something.

I chugged Water for like 3 hours before midnight the night before. Went to a midnight movie, slept late. Once you are at the hospital, so much is going on, you won't care about drinking. Plus they start and IV long before your surgery, you won't be thirsty.

Plus the though of aspirating on the table and choking or getting Fluid in your lungs is deterrent enough not to drink.

My surgery was at 2:30 p.m. I was supposed to fast from midnight and drink only Clear Liquids. But since the surgery was so late, they said I could have a cracker with jam before 8 a.m. I didn't have to stop drinking until I was admitted, about two hours before surgery. It's worth asking!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
