I am 13 days post opt, doing really well, getting in my Protein and liquids but have only lost 8 pounds. I know I shouldn't be discouraged but I am.

Be patient! You are healing and your body is trying to figure out what's going on!

Last diet I was on, I lost 15lbs in 6 weeks, and that was pretty fast! That works out to a pound every 3 days, approximately. You are losing pounds in half the time!

Why would you be discouraged?

I know I'm probably being ridiculous, just seeing the post of people losing a lot in the first two months. I have a small fear I won't lose. But I needed to be patient I know.

Average weight loss is 15lbs each of the first 2 months, then it drops to 10lbs a month until about 6 months post op, after that it drops to 4-8 pounds monthly until maintenance is reached.

There are faster and slower losers, but this is average.

When is the last time you lost 8 pounds in 13 days? You are doing wonderfully.

It is important to maintain realistic expectations throughout the process. You did not become nearly 100 pounds over your ideal weight overnight and the weight will not be lost overnight, either. Patience is a virtue.

I was the classic definition of a slow loser: I averaged a loss of 3 to 6 pounds per month, and it took 17+ months for me to lose 100 pounds. Here's the important part: I have maintained my weight loss in a world where the majority of weight loss surgery patients regain some or all of their weight, or never even get to their goal weights.

The weight maintenance phase will be harder and more important than the current weight loss phase you are in. Good luck to you, and keep your eye on the prize (patiently).

Thank you! It helps to get perspective, this is life long not the numerous fad diets I've tried!

I was really excited when I lost 15 pounds 8 days after surgery. Then it seemed like nothing happened. I'm almost 5 weeks out and have lost a total of 20 pounds. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one frustrated.

@TeahTeah I know what you mean. I'm 4 weeks out and have lost nothing during the last week.

You shouldn't be concerned as you are still healing and your body needs to catch up. Make sure to follow your nutritionists recommendations and also try tracking your macro nutrients to keep within the plan. Remember, it's a marathon not a sprint. You got this!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
