Surgery is 5/25 but having some minor second thoughts....Can anyone relate?

Recommended Posts

Hi all! I have my first appointment with the surgeon next week (well "first" of this round as I have tried to have WLS twice before in the past but ultimately denied by insurance-this time I'm self-pay so no one can stop me but me!) I know I need this surgery, and I am so excited that I was finally approved for a loan to pay for it after years of waiting. Now that the time is here I keep second guessing myself almost daily. My fears: can anyone put me at ease?

Never waking up...I KNOW this is not logical...I am a mother and I think I fear leaving my family but this WLS is to PROLONG this life! I am terrified of going under. Can you sign consent to the surgery a day early and come in day-of on anti-anxiety meds? like super drugged up??

Seriously, my next biggest fear is being SO thirsty. I have been tested for diabetes my whole adult life over and over and I DO NOT have it but I have been thirsty as long as I can remember. I am never without ice Water. I drink about a gallon a day. Usually sipping but if Im hot Im guzzling. I drink while I eat also. I am so scared I will need water so badly when I wake up and they wont let me have any and also I know there will be a huge drop in how much water I can have in an any given time. The thought of being thirsty terrifies me but I could care less about wanting to eat solids and not being able to.

Lastly, the pain. I have debilitating back pain exacerbated by all the extra weight. Lying on the hard surgery table then getting cut on...I fear Ill wake in severe back pain and even worse surgery pain. I have had a C-section-can anyone compare the surgery pain to C-section?

Any advice would be great to help keep my eye on the prize of having a better life after WLS.

If you sip Water all the time, that's perfect! I won't lie to you, it is hard adjusting to not drinking water while I eat, but if I drink as much as I can and then set the timer for 10 minutes, eat, set the timer for an hour, and then get busy, I'm fine and you will be too.

A timer...Ok didnt think about the timer thing for Water, thought it was just used to remind you about meal time. Great thanks!!

Have you guys seen the Ulla's - it's a little way of reminding to drink more Water. I'ver ordered one even if it just helps to get me into a better habit with water https://store.bariatricpal.com/products/ulla-hydration-reminder-bottle-attachment-available-in-7-colors

I'm scheduled for 5/23. And I DO get nervous and then I get excited. I started a journal on the day of my first appointment and wrote down ALL the reasons I had for wanting to do WLS. When I get nervous I re-read that list. Good luck to you!

I did this exact same thing and am scheduled on May 24. Nerves are normal for a variety of reasons. My nerves are just stemming from a tinge of sadness I have with having to do this alone since my spouse can't get my surgery date off of work. Reading my skinny bucket list was helpful and definitely journaling to empty my thoughts

23rd here, so very soon for me. Tuesday!

- and once or twice doubts passed through my mind. I'm nervous, yes. But even more excited.

Good things are in store!

It's natural. Because I know it's happening, and everything will change for the better.

- that's how I see it.

My date is May 25th too!
I think that it is completely normal to second guess yourself on something so big. As long as you know what to expect post-op and beyond, you should be good.
You CAN do this!

I had my gastric sleeve surgery on 3/27. Of course I was nervous! Looking back now..I am the happiest I have been in years. I am down almost 50 pounds in two months! No pain.....Of course, each person is different. My appetite is nothing like it use to be. I eat smaller portions. Protein!! You will do fine! I am looking forward to golfing, because this is the first time in years, I will be able to see the ball on the tee!

Thanks for the reassurance and tips everyone. I've been watching some of the YouTube clips and trying to stay focused on the end goal.

Every now and again a hint of doubt creeps up. Surgery is 5/25. ....Wondering if this is normal.

I'm having surgery the same day. Now that it's so close, that same thought has crept up. But I know I'm ready. My surgeon requires a pre-op liquid diet for one week. I'm on day three. Doing good so far. Are you having to do this too?

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
