Dry mouth after surgery caused from CPAP

Recommended Posts

Good Morning I'm in the early stages of this process but I have been on my CPAP machine since June 2014. I have never experienced dry mouth and I use a full face mask and keep Water in the humidifier. For those who are experiencing dry mouth do you have a humidifier as part of your machine and do you keep water in it?

From my understanding its not the humidifier so muce?as just sleeping with your moth open. I have thw humidifier set and still open my mouth while sleeping.

What type of mask do you have?

Yes it has a humidifier and I've definitely checked that off the list of possible causes. This only started right after my surgery. I pretty much keep constant dry mouth now anyhow but when I wake up its monstrously exaggerated! Woke up the other morning and my upper lip was literally curled in and stuck to my front gums!!! I had to laugh but it's getting out of hand! Just wondering if anyone else has the same problem.

I have the same problem. It's to the point I'm not using the CPAP abd doing another sleep study to see if I still need it

Yes. I've been having trouble and taking it off at night because I'm like totally dry. Sometimes it even prevents me from falling asleep. I'll try increasing my humidity level and let you all know if it helps. I'm 2 weeks post op and sleeping like $h!t.

Yes, I have severe dry mouth!!! I can't talk but a sentence or two before I need a drink. It's seriously embarrassing. My lip gets caught up on my teeth! I have been using Act toothpaste and Biotin spray, mouthwash and gel! Yes I use it all! I think the best though is the spray. So basically I always carry Water with me and tbd spray!

i was sleeved june 9th. i was diagnosed with sleep apnea a couple months before surgery and my nasal mask and CPAP have been fabulous. I've never had dry mouth in my life and never had it with the CPAP prior to surgery. However in the last few days I have been waking up in the middle of the night with the most severe dry mouth. I wondered if somehow the humidifier on my machine wasn't working but that does not seem to be the case. I'm not sure what the fix is, hopefully this is just one of those postop things that will slowly work itself out.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
