I just started my 6 month journey! Yesterday was my first appointment with my dietitian and surgeon, and I'm a little overwhelmed. My surgery is going to be in November, but there isn't a date set in stone yet. What should I expect from here on out? Should I start drinking Protein Shakes now? We talked about them but I forgot to ask when I should start them.

Its up to you if you wanted to start this early and try out various Protein shakes to see which one you would like. But, often times what you like Pre-Op may not be the case Post-op. Continue with your nutritional appointments and nutritionist will give you a guide on the best protein shakes which offer the most protein. From here on out it depends if your insurance carrier requires for you to lose weight prior to approval. But, if they don't just ensure that you gain no weight during the required 6 month visits. Try to start get moving a little more. Try incorporating the gym more so it's an easier transition after your surgery is completed. Try to eat a little more lean and introduce more veggies to your daily meals if you haven't done so.

Thank you. I'm already eating lean and more fruits and veggies, I'm slowly weaning away from caffeine as well (down to 1 bottle a day). I'm trying to get used to increasing my Water intake as well.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
