celeniavsg 33 Posted May 10, 2017 Hi, I am so curious to know why so many sleevers pre-op and post-op so different? There are times during pre-op when I wanted to ask questions and vent at how miserable I was during my 3-day clear liquid, all while a lot of you guys were suffering through it for 2 weeks, I just stood quiet. LOL! Now, tomorrow I make 7 days post-op and I can begin my puree stage, some people need to wait almost 3 weeks for this. Of course I start to overthink and worry myself like "Should I even try to eat eggs tomorrow?" "What if I'm not fully healed yet?" Honestly, I feel great. No pain whatsoever. Just sore at the incision sites. I am meeting my Protein goals so far. Here are my dietary guidelines: http://www.cornellweightlosssurgery.org/pdf/dietary_guidelines_sleeve_gastrectomy.pdf Let me know what you think. Thanks! 4 hopekate, traeleo, brownsfan321 and 1 other reacted to this

No starchy vegetables, farina, oatmeal.... I started puree today and managed 1/8th of a cup of low fat cottage cheese.
kimberb 323 Posted May 10, 2017 My plan did not have a puree stage. Each surgeon has their own plans to follow and their reasons for it. Always follow your surgeons plan. When trying something new, take a very tiny bit into your tummy. Wait....nothing, try another bite. Eat slow and tiny bites. Be sure to weigh anything you put into your mouth
PatientEleventyBillion 851 Posted May 10, 2017 (edited) What boggles my mind is why the surgeons are making the diet plans and not a registered dietitian/nutritionist. Seems like a waste of time and added hassle, knowing how busy surgeons tend to be. Anyways, I agree, stick to the plan. Sometimes those plans might be modified and tailored directly to you, especially if you had any issues with say, the leak test/barium swallow or whatever else.. they might want to ease some people into a regular diet for cautionary reasons. Others, they may not be so concerned about. In either case, I wouldn't argue with the person who did the surgery. What boggles my mind is that there is still no best standard available, neither for the peri-operative nutrition nor for long term nutrition. What all nutrition guidelines seem to have in common is "drink enough Water and take your Vitamins and minerals". Apart from this... nothing. 1 jeichman reacted to this
Sosewsue61 3,185 Posted May 13, 2017 I see other commonalities: Protein first (forever) 60-80-100 grams, no liquids with meals, then vegetables 4 PatientEleventyBillion, mrsdaniel2013, her1981 and 1 other reacted to this
Ms. Brightside 121 Posted May 13, 2017 (edited) Surgeons are all so different in their recommendations. I would venture to guess that it has something to do with their education and/or experience in the field. Both my pre- and post-op diets are quite different than most others. Pre-op: low-fat/low-calorie diet for 2 weeks (no "liquids only" phase) - veggies & salads with low-fat dressing strongly encouraged! Post-op: 3 days of Clear Liquids only, then FIVE WEEKS of full liquids only Pre-op's not been so bad for me, but I know post-op is going to be a different story! rosstheboss 21 Posted May 13, 2017 5 weeks liquids! That's crazy ! I'm on day 8 of 14 post of liquids and it's driving me crazy. Not that I'm that hungry. But now eating Soup, Protein Drinks and Water. Soup a bit salty, see the dr thurs so hopefully can start mushy foods next. 1 PasadenaMom reacted to this

Basically, anything that can be blended and/or put through a strainer: yogurt, pudding, soup, Protein Shakes, even liquidy oatmeal or cream of wheat.

celeniavsg 33 Posted May 30, 2017 I spoke to my NUT about this, she told me that some surgeons are a bit extra when it comes to diets to be super safe to avoid complications and admitted some are a little too intense. Patients can always ask if they can be cleared sooner for next stages if they are tolerating their current diet well. So it's really depending on the surgeon. 1 Nynjesq reacted to this
Joann454 1,329 Posted May 30, 2017 It was two weeks full liquids then on to purée until about a month before my surgery. Then they switched it out and now it's three weeks full. My NUT said they have a new head of surgery and he's uber conservative. She did roll her eyes. I'm so asking. I feel like two weeks on full is the average from reading around on here. I was only one week full liquids, 3 weeks puree and now i'm on soft solid foods introducing things little by little. I can finally eat a salad. (Never thought I'd say that LOL) Btw, tuna hates me.
