Not hungry, worried about protein

Recommended Posts

I'm over a month post op and cleared for whatever I can tolerate. I'm worried because I am not getting 60g of Protein a day. No issues with my stomach, I just have no appetite, and the thought of food disgusts me. I worry about what its doing to my muscles and metabolism. My weight loss has also slowed considerably, even with 30 minutes of hard exercise a week. This has been going on about a week. Anyone else experienced this? Got thru this? Force eating or just listen to your body?

Yes, not getting your Protein in will impact your weight loss and mess your metabolism up. I had little to no desire to eat for the first few weeks. I only ate because I needed fuel for my body. If food isn't interesting to you yet then at least get your Protein Shakes in. Remember that 60g is basically the bare minimum. You want to hit that every day for sure but try to stay above that if you can. It'll take some time to dial things in and figure out where your happy medium is.

Just keep trying new foods and find a few healthy go-tos until you're appetite returns. This will all pass in time.

60g is two Premier Protein shakes. I'd supplement with those til your appetite returns. Atkins shakes have 15g each. Not sure about other brands, because those were the two recommended to me, and the easiest to find.

I can't stand Premier Protein, but I do Water down an Atkins and get it down. I never thought it would be this hard to get Protein in, especially after all the head hunger I had to work thru after surgery.

Oh and everything tastes sweet, so all I want to eat is Sauerkraut, pickles, and spicy salsa.

Strange how bodies are different I would dump with Atkins shakes now I'm okay but very sensitive to sucralose. Get the Protein Shakes in even if you don't like use the motivator of preventing your hair falling out!! You need 60 grams which is 2 premier protein shakes. I think Atkins are 15 grams not sure. This will pass but it's not an option with the protein just get it in! It will slow down your Hair loss which you will see the effects at 5 to 6 months post op and will keep your metabolism going and help your body heal.

Hi Blondie66,
Quick question. Where do you get your premier protein shakes? Are they in stores? Or just online?

I'm two weeks post op and facing the same thing. I don't have hunger and I'm gagging over my few liquid sources as I'm sick of them and they all taste yucky to me now. I am done with pudding, oatmeal, broth, Jello and even with the Protein Shakes I have to force them. I'm getting scared about getting dehydrated. I see my surgeon and nutritionist on Monday so hopefully I can add more variety.

I CAN'T SAY ENOUGH - GET YOU'RE Protein IN!
I am 6 months out and lost about 50% of my hair volume. I used nectar vanilla powder and mixed it with all kinds of Crystal Light flavors just to keep things from getting old. Do whatever you've got to get your protein in!

Left out the part that I was NOT getting all of my protein in. I think that caused my Hair loss and weakness.

Have you tried nectar? I just gotna sampler from Amazon and the two flavors I tried were delicious and you could not taste the Protein at all, plus you can mix it with Water or milk and each serving has 23g of protein

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
