RainyFriday 1 Posted May 9, 2017 HI All, just finished my preop for gastric bypass surgery however the upper GI showed esophageal dysmotility and now have to have a test called esophageal manometry. Does anyone know if this can prevent me from having the surgery? Any input is welcomed, thanks!
LaLa Ladybug 57 Posted May 10, 2017 HI All, just finished my preop for gastric bypass surgery however the upper GI showed esophageal dysmotility and now have to have a test called esophageal manometry. Does anyone know if this can prevent me from having the surgery? Any input is welcomed, thanks!Hey RainyFriday,I'm also preop and the upper GI reflected the same thing. Ultimately it lead to an endoscopy with a diagnosis of Barrett's Esophagus due to pretty bad reflux/gerd that I'd had for at least a year a few years back. By the time they did the scope, I had no idea I still had acid reflux. They said it was called "silent GERD". I've had a bad cough for over a year after pneumonia & my PCP just figured it was my asthma that we couldn't get under control. Have you had bouts of acid reflux? Any coughing? Ever find yourself briefly kind of choking in your own saliva? If answer is no, then that's a good thing! If yes, then no worries, because its treatable. All that being said, the gastro who did the scope advised I need to stay on Protonix for next few years & had to stop taking anti-inflammatories (ibuprofen, naproxen, etc) immediately (which we have to do for our WLS surgery anyhow). My surgery is set for early July, so now it's just prep time and continued pre-op weight loss until it's time for the pre-op diet. Hope this helps ease your nerves. RainyFriday 1 Posted May 10, 2017 LaLa LadyBug, thank you so much for responding. You have calmed my nerves. My test is scheduled for Tuesday and I am hoping I am done after this. The upper gi did show a hiatal hernia and I do have gerd. But I do not cough nor have choked on my saliva. I do take ibuprofen daily and that probably does not help the acid reflux. Congrats on your date. Keep me posted and thanks again for answering my question. 1 LaLa Ladybug reacted to this
