Pre-Op diet question?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone! I'm new to the site and new to LapBand! Yesterday I got my surgery date scheduled (Oct 19 - 2 weeks from today!). I'm excited and nervous and everything in between. My question is regarding the pre-op diet. From what I've read and heard, generally the pre-op diet is liquids only. My doctor's pre-op diet is real food mixed with Protein Shakes? ? For example, yogurt and a bagle for Breakfast, shake for lunch, chicken/salad for dinner and a shake before bed. That seems very 'generous' and I'm wondering if anyone else had this experience? I'm using Dr. Marsden in the DFW Texas area. Any thoughts?

Hey there yank, we are scheduled for the same day! I am in Canada. Our pre-op diet has food as well. I called the nurse this week and she told me the 3 rules was to stay away from carbs, fats and sugar. So today I am having a fat free yogurt, cucumbers, red peppers, cottage cheese and for dinner I am going to have a grilled chicken breast with salad/balsamic vinnegar and Broccolli. Good luck to ya, I am feeling really great and strong today that I can do this. I hope the next two weeks go quickly!

I had dr. Marsden as well. You will find that a lot of diets vary and some people on this board had all liquid, some don't have any diet at all, some only have to do liquids the day before...so it varies a lot by dr.

I lost 7lbs pre-op w/ Dr. Marsden's diet. He is a really great dr... I really really like him! Good luck!!

Hello,

I am from Croatia and I had my surgery 10 days ago without any pre-op diet and everything was great...I had chance to say goodbye to my favourite food...:hungry:...I really don t see any reason why should anyone be on pre-op diet? I went to hospital , didn t eat about 24 hours before surgery, didn t drink 12 hours and that s it...I m alive, banded and not hungry...yet:bounce:

I'm being banded 10-25-07 in DFW area also Dr.'s Smith & Ferrara. I start my pre-op diet next week it is a low carb high Protein diet pretty much like Atkins. I had the option to do that for 2 weeks or 1 week of liquids. I opted for the food. Good luck Nice to know there's others in the same area.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
