Gained 6 lbs this week. 1 mo PO

Recommended Posts

I'm pissed!

I have gained 6 lbs this week.. and 2lbs between yesterday and today. The only difference is that I am now on a regular diet (minus raw fruit/veg) so I am eating chicken, I tried some pork this week, some steak and my Protein Shakes. This is what a regular day looks like

Am: Quest Protein 1 scoop, 8 oz fat free Fairlife milk 180 cals, 33g protein

Lunch: 1.5 oz baked chicken breast 40 cals, 10 G protein (sometimes I'll have 1 oz of broccoli)

Dinner: 1 oz flank steak/ 1 oz broccoli: 60 cals, 9 G protein

-or-

Another Protein Shake 33g protein, 180 cals

Looking at this now I may not be having enough calories ( my nut hasn't mentioned how much I am supposed to be consuming, I assume it's 500-800 calories? And should only be eating 1-2 oz per meal.

And I am drinking about 5 16oz Water bottles a day.

I thought that by getting closer to my protein goals and water I would start dropping.

I am down from 255 to 222 (before the 6lb gain this week). And I haven't really lost anymore since week 3. I don't have another office apt until June 8th.

Hopefully I have provided enough info for feedback.

Thank you.

You probably aren't eating enough yet. My NUT has all her WLS patients eating 5 times a day - - every 3 -4 hours. Protein and fluids were our only goal at 1 month - no calorie counting. At that time I was just starting to eat solid foods and could barely eat more than 1oz of solid meat like chicken, steak, etc. We weren't allowed to have any raw or fibrous veggies until week 6. But I never had any room for veggies anyway until the 3rd month. I was probably averaging 400 -600 calories at that point increasing to 800 by the end of month two.

You may be experiencing the dreaded 3 week stall. Our bodies have gone through a lot with this surgery and sometimes take a break. Are you constipated? Is it that time of the month?

Are you walking or exercising yet?

I was going to ask about Constipation, too. I'm 6 weeks post-op and am just now "going" more regularly (but not daily) . I had to rely on Miralax for a while, too.
Can you reach out to your nutritionist and show your food log for some guidance?

Thanks for the reply! I was suffering with Constipation week 2&3 but the most I would fluctuate was 1 or 2 lbs not 6 [emoji24] but I have been drinking miralax all week and have been very regular which was awesome! I was cleared for exercise this week so I was hoping to go back to the gym tomorrow and hopefully that will help. Hopefully it is the 3 week stall and there is a possibility that I could be starting that time of the month. All good things to consider, thank you!

I gained 5 in like week 2 of post op. After that I lost it but it took me down the road of craziness. I immediately thought we'll maybe my bypass didn't work. After a week, I had lost it again and started back losing weight.

Thanks Meaghan! I haven't gained any more this week but I haven't lost the 6lbs... hopefully this stall will break soon! I appreciate your feedback! It's hard to get this surgery and have no one in real life who understands, thank the lord for this app lol

I totally understand. Luckily I have my sister to ask as well. But the weight did start back going down. Don't worry, just keep doing what you are suppose to.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
