Did surgeon or NUT give preop diet requirements

Recommended Posts

I "should" be getting a call today to tell me that the surgeon reviewed my files of "hoop proof" to approve and send to insurance. My question, when I went to see a dietician as an insurance requirement to receive clearance for surgery, she was the one to review all of the pre and post op diet info. I have the guides from her to follow when time. Has anyone else been given the preop diet from the NUT instead of surgeon? I keep seeing that some people have liquid only diets while other have lean Proteins and veg diets and since mine states the latter, I want to make sure it's correct.

Of course I'll be talking to my surgeon when I get the date set. Just wondering if this is fairly normal.

Our programme is all based from our weight management team and our surgeon has the last word on surgical acceptance no matter how or what you have done.

I know a couple people in my group had their surgery and when woke up were told by surgeon it was a full open procedure or were closed up as they didn't comply with liver diet - surgeon went through them like a ton of bricks for wasting his time.

My NUT only went over the post-op diet. The pre-op portion came ditectly from my surgeon. My surgeon prescribes a low-fat diet, including salads, veggies, lean Protein, & 1 Protein Shake a day as a supplement.

My instructions came from my NUT. But they work closely with the surgeons within the Bariatric center of excellence they support to make sure they meet the surgeons requirements. During my preop class there were some different "rules" depending on which surgeon you had. My surgeon only required liquids for 1 day prior and that was it. I was completely lucky!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
