Anyone get REALLY scared close to surgery?

Recommended Posts

I was nervous to the morning of my surgery. I had my family there for support. I was being prepped for surgery and almost walked out of the hospital to leave. Then I got strong and said to myself that I have worked so hard for this moment. I will never forget what I went through getting to that point. Be strong. Try to have family there with you. You can do this so that you have a better tomorrow. My health is very important to me. Diabetes scares me. So I decided to just go through with it and I told my doc to be sure to take good care of me. He kept his promise and had a nurse by my side even when I woke up after the surgery. I started walking right away when they put me in a room. That stopped the nausea and made me strong. I was discharged the next day. As soon as I got home I went out walking. I now walk six miles a day. Three after Breakfast and three after lunch. If the weather is bad then I use the treadmill that I got. Please be strong and I know you can do this. Best of luck to you.

Thank you! I know I HAVE to do this, or my life isn't going to get any better..only worse. The pain will increase, the mobility derease. I have to just think about the good things that are going to happen for me. Did you have any complications or side effects? Thats my biggest fear

SUPER NERVOUS:51_scream: My surgery is scheduled for May 10th and Im having so many "WHAT IF" thoughts swimming in my head. I reached out to one of my surgery sisters to see how her surgery went and she told me she didn't go through with it. She was scared. I have been on this journey since November 2016 and TWO DAYS before surgery Im getting cold feet.:(

I'm June 10. I am also VERY nervous, but I am more scared of what will happen if I DON'T have the surgery. My pain will continue to get worse, My bp and cholesterol will probably get higher. And who knows what else will happen (heart disease, cancer diabetes etc) I HAVE to do this!!!! You'll be telling me 2 days before my surgery how well it went for you and for ME not to be scared!!! GOOD LUCK!!!

I am really scared too and my surgery date #1 of 2 major surgeries planned is June 1st. Dr. is doing a revision of a faulty rny I've had for 13 years and fixing a hiatal hernia it caused, and in #2 surgery doing a sleeve, possibly later a DS. I am scared if I don't have the surgery and I'm scared if I do!!

Anyone having surgery in May or June interested in being a surgery buddy with me? I'm nice, really!! My surgery date is June 1 2017 no the 07-18-2016 show on the profile as it took 3 appeals to get insurance to cover.

I wish it would pass. I have an appt with the cardiologist and then pre-admission testing and my last appt with my dr. Maybe he can help ease my worries. I KNOW if I lose weight I would feel better and I KNOW I can't do it by myself. I HAVE to do this. I'm a worrier by nature. Thank you for letting me know it's not just me

Oh yes. I have almost backed out twice. I'm two weeks from surgery and the nerves are kicking in hard! Can't wait for it to be behind me! Don't back out! It's scary but remember why you're doing it. Oh I also went to success stories and read all about how much happier and healthier people are. It helped a lot. Good luck!

Thank you, I'll have to read the success stories. I don't think I'll get scared enough to back out, but I just wish the "excitement" would return. Good luck to you, and let me know how it goes!!

I'm May 10 too and getting nervous! I'm going through with it no matter WHAT though. Mostly will just be happy to be on the other side of it/not have the anxiety and worry that goes along with the buildup to the surgery. Check in again on Wednesday night!

All I can say that you should definitely go through with it. You have done everything you needed to do and now your ready. You will feel so relieved once it's done. Your health will improve and you will get so many compliments. I went from a size 15 in juniors jeans to a size 5 in three months. I can't tell you the feeling I had when I was in the fitting room that first time trying to find what size I fit into. It was a very emotional moment. I have not worn a size 5 since high school. I'm now 46 years old. I avoided diabetes and no longer take blood pressure medicine. I get so many compliments from so many people. People I haven't seen in a few months and didn't even recognize me. I waved hello to them and they didn't realize it was me. I have worked hard. Exercise twice a day. A brisk walk mostly. You can do this and you will be so very happy that you did it. And your surgery sister will see that you did it and she will try again. Let me know how it turns out. Good luck to you.

I had my sleeve done yesterday, May 8th. I had already shared my fears and concern 2 days prior as well. I am now awaiting my shuttle to head back to my hotel as we speak. So far I am having very, very little complications. The only issue I had was gas/CO2 level pains. But nothing that is intolerable. My experience, so far has been wonderful. My advice to you all is to remember why you were compelled to have the surgery in the first place. It is different for everyone of course. You have all come this far, and I believe probably the worst of it is over. I feel the worst part so far was the liquid diet prior to surgery. And most of you have already completed most of this part by now. For 24 hours after surgery all you can have is ice and Water. But what is so crazy is that at almost 24 hours post surgery with only water and ice, I'm not even hungry! food is not on my mind right now. And that is a first in over 25 years! You have all made it this far. Please believe me when I say, you've got this. You've made it this far, you've got this. Good luck to you all. If you have an experience even only half as good as mine was at the OCC with Dr. Ariel Ortiz, then you certainly will be glad you went through with the surgery.

That's great T.Rene! Makes it a little easier for those of us yet to go under the knife this week. I hope everything continues to go well for you. It definitely seems you've succeeded in one of the hardest parts, getting your mind adjusted to your new life. All the best to you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
