Diabetes Type 2 - Gastric Sleeve Pre Op

Recommended Posts

I'm just wondering if anyone had any problems keeping their BS below 200 prior to surgery. I had my pre-op phone call with the anesthesiologists office yesterday and the lady told me my sugar MUST be below 200. It's a crap shot honestly with my blood sugar in the morning. I can not eat anything the night before and my sugar will be 250 or even higher then on other days will be like 120-140. I'm stressing a little about this.

I don't get it. They can give you medication to lower it on the day of surgery if needed.

How do you maintain your diabetes? Those are very high dangerous numbers. Are you working with an endocrine specialist or even your regular doc?

I was told my numbers needed to be higher rather than lower on surgery day because of the dangers of low Blood Sugar during surgery. I stopped all meds 48 hrs prior to surgery and went in with a 190 I think.

I don't think I ever had sugar higher than 180.

I didn't have any pre-op blood sugar requirements for surgery.

Have you started your pre-op diet yet? I imagine doing that for a couple of weeks would help your blood sugar be below 200 when it's time for surgery. Also remember that at least one day prior to surgery you will only be on Clear Liquids, which should help with the number.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
