Post Op Sleep Study

Recommended Posts

Well tonight is my first post op sleep study. My sleep doctor has said that the surgery corrected my obstructive apnea but now the data shows that it is central sleep apnea. So tonights sleep study will

a) see if it is indeed central sleep apnea

B) see if I need to go from a CPAP to an Autopap machine and

c) to see if I can go from a full face mask to a nasal pillow or something similar.

Don't get me wrong, I am so happy that the surgery took care of the obstructive apnea, I just wish (and hope) that the machine is interpreting the sleep data wrong and that I don't have central apnea.

I've had obstructive sleep apnea for 16 years, and used nasal pillows the whole time. I am not sure why they forced you to wear an full face mask.

Not sure why. I had my original sleep study back in '04.

Well, either way, I am sending you positive thoughts that you can get rid of the whole thing!

Well, what a horrible sleep study it was. First, they woke me up to make me put on a chin strap (man was that uncomfortable) and then the nasal pillow was hurting my nose (I think it may have been on too tight). So I ended up have them get me a full face mask to use for the rest of the study. They had to wake me up a few times so that I would sleep on my back. So after not a lot of sleep, I went home (the low tire pressure light came on in my car on the way home, second time this week) so I drove straight to Belle Tire. It was going to take them an hour and a half to get to my car so I walked home in the rain (about a mile), changed into dry clothes and then Belle Tire called and said they found a hole in the tire that couldn't be patched/plugged. I have the tire/wheel warranty on my car so I told them that and that I would be there to pick it up and take it to the Ford Dealer. So Belle Tire charged me $20.00 to find a hole in my tire. I drove it to the dealer and 2 hours later and a new tire later I got to drive home. When I got home I packed up my car and drove 4 1/2 hours to the top of the mitten to spend the night. I spent the night, sat in a two hour long meeting (to speak for 5 minutes) and then drive back 4 1/2 hours home to go to a fundraiser. So now I am waiting to get the results from the sleep study from the VA hospital to see if I need an AutoPAP or if I just need to keep my CPAP.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
