Hi everyone. I am a new member of this forum, however I am not new to constantly visiting and reading about people's experiences. I am from Boston and I just got my date to be sleeved June 9th at Beth Israel Deaconess medical Center. My BMi is 39 and I found out while going through this process that I have sleep apnea which made me eligible through insurance. I am also going to be part of a study with brown university in Rhode Island that will match me with a fit bit, one of their smart phones and a device that counts swallows to see if this helps patients stay on track. I am excited but I am very nervous as I live alone and am hesitant to bother people to help me.

Anyone else who had struggled with this?

Welcome! I would suggest you do think about who could be of help to you immediately post surgery. Even think about someone who could spend a night or two with you. You won't be incapacitated, but you will have had major surgery with anesthesia. Plus, you shouldn't be doing any lifting. Besides that, a shoulder to lean on temporarily is a good thing. Good luck!

Thank you for your kind reply. I was thinking about using people from my church as they are local and kind to help. I'll have my cpap machine and all the clothes and supplies I took with me. I wondered if I could Uber home myself. Not all my friends were supportive of this decision, as my closest friend I am missing an annual trip we take every spring, and her birthday to do this, which makes me feel like a crappy friend. She's also an hour away. All my family members are far away. I've recovered from surgery by myself before from having my thyroid glad out a few years ago which gave me the confidence to do this. Just nervous now.

I understand. Sounds like you have the beginning of a plan. Your hospital may not let you Uber home (mine would not have), so check that in any case. But it would be nice to have someone at home to help you get installed again and not feel alone.

Crappy friend? I don't think so; you're taking care of yourself. She should understand. And think of the fun things you will be able to do together when you're feeling better. :-)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
