2 weeks post-op, not eating/drinking enough

Recommended Posts

My surgery was 4/18/17, and I seem to not be eating or drinking enough. I was doing well with the liquid diet, but doctor said I could start eating purée/soft foods, but I don't feel satisfied at times, and I start to hurt after about 15 minutes into my meal, so I wait for the pain to subside to continue with my food & then I'm full. I am also having a hard time eating the 3 meals & 2 Protein Shakes, along with my Water intake. I haven't journaled at all and am wondering if that could be part of my problem. I am just feeling well enough to start exercising & thought that would help too. Has anyone been in my situation so early on???

This is the toughest time. I found that everybody tells you what to eat and how much but they fail to tell you that it takes some time to get there. As you heal you will be able to tolerate meals better. As your swelling goes down you'll be able to fit a bit more in. That early on I could not get 4 ounces down. I ate two ounces at a time all day long. Your Protein Shakes count as Fluid so sip, sip, sip. All day long. Drinking a whole shake at once may not be possible yet.

Lastly, don't forget to eat really slowly. I always struggle if I eat too fast.

Good luck.

I ended back in the hospital 3 weeks after my procedure for dehydration. I am still struggling just to get Water down... and keep it down. food? everything makes me feel sick. broth is okay... but try a cream based Soup and it hurts. I need protein.... (would really like to keep my hair) but I throw up after just a few sips. When I ended up back in hospital they did CT scan and there is nothing wrong with my innerds. I hope I get through this phase ...... and soon! The kicker?.... I lost weight first week... and then nothing since. really?

You won't lose when dehydrated - your body is trying to hold onto everything to survive and heal. You say broth is okay, then do broth all day and have you tried unflavored Protein stirred into it? Or buy prepackaged protein broth. Popsicles. Jello.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
