Thirsty? Tired? Hungary? The struggle continues.....

Recommended Posts

I'm getting close to goal and find I'm sabotaging myself regularly. I think my sense of "Geez, I've lost almost all the weight!!" has given me a false sense of being in control of my weight and my eating. In the past few months I've identified at least one of my major struggles.....determining whether I'm thirsty or tired or actually hungry. I'm trying to get in the habit of asking myself that question before I put anything in my mouth. It's becoming pretty evident I confuse many things with actual "hunger". I had never heard the term "head hunger" until I joined this forum........but I'm certainly understanding the reality of it now. Stress, over scheduling, too many things to do, not taking time to sit down to eat......apparently I have many triggers.

I feel pretty confident I'm not the only person with this major eating problem however it manifests itself. Curious how others deal with it.........have you been successful? Any tips or suggestions?

Sincere thanks for the support and encouragement I received from this forum!

I find it helps to just start with trying something to drink before trying food. Then if I'm satiated it was just thirst. It is important to journal your food to keep track of how many calories and how much Protein your are getting in each day.

If you track your food you will know if you haven't eaten enough or are eating too much. It can be hard to determine whether it's actual hunger or just head hunger but if you just plan your meals out and eat food on a schedule you will know know you have eaten enough and it isn't true hunger.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
