New clothes and shopping in standard size stores

Recommended Posts

I have lost 125 lbs as of this morning. I have been shopping in plus size stores my whole life. Even in middle school, I was plus sized. I am now at the point where I can go into any store and buy clothes and not generally the biggest in the standard store. I don't know about you guys, but I have a really hard time accepting my new size. I always take clothes that are too big into the dressing room. I'm always waiting for the sales associates in the normal stores to look at me and tell me that I don't belong in the store or to point out that I'm a fraud and am obviously in the wrong store. I know it is completely mental because I'm in small and medium tops and size 12 pants, but it is like I can't accept it! I feel like I'm going to have a Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman moment and they are going to kick me out!

Anyone else experience this?

It wasn't until I was a 12 that my WL really hit me hard.

A few things that helped me accept my size...

Taking my measurements, and comparing them to size charts. Numbers don't lie.

Trying on clothes every week. For a while even if I wasn't going to buy something I dedicated 2-3 hours a week to trying on clothes, trying on clothes in various sizes and brands helped convince me of my size.

I still have a hard time just picking clothes by looking at them. It doesn't help that in normal sizes there is more size variation in sizes than with plus sizes. There are fewer plus size clothing makers and fewer size variations. In regular clothes not on do you have brand variations, but I also shop in juniors a lot and that is whole different thing too. Lately I can look at dresses like sheath dresses and know they will fit. I wear a 10 in Calvin and Ralph Lauren and I know what that looks like, so if a dress looks that size I have a good chance of fitting it. I wear a G cup so my boobs are an issue. If something has stretch and I don't have to go up to fit my breasts in I can wear an 8. I can eye ball that too.

Still this has been like 5 months in the making.

I always shopped in normal stores for accessories or with my friends so I don't feel like a fraud. I was a shopaholic before so I feel comfortable in any store. Plus I look like a shopper so sales people love me.

You look amazing! Congratulations, and I hope you can savor every minute of slipping on a new size. Seeing your photos is really inspiring. I am so anxious to get out of plus sizes. For years I have walked past the regular sizes and looked wistfully at the beautiful clothes that I have longed to wear. I have promised myself I'm not buying anything new until I can fit in regular sizes. Hoping that day comes soon!

You look amazing!! I definitely have that problem and I'm not even in regular clothes yet. I still have the huge body mentality. I started at 540 pounds and couldn't fit most places. Not in chairs, booths, through crowds or some doorways. I look at these items and think "I will never make it through there" But now at 290 pounds I make it through pretty easily. I went from a size 36/38 to a size 18/20 top and 22 bottom. My bottoms are probably even smaller though but I have a very large hanging skin there. I am having plastic surgery June 5th to have it removed though! I am so excited but also very nervous.

I can't wait to be able to shop in regular stores!!

Congratulations on the loss! Wow! Isn't is crazy how long it takes to feel smaller? I just went through all of my clothes and tried EVERYTHING on. I had to get rid of lots of clothes that I was hanging on to. I was waiting to fit into 1/2 of my wardrobe, but now it is too big.
I can't wait for my brachioplasty and 360 lift! I'm going for a consult in a couple of weeks! Let us know how it goes! That is super exciting!

@hmm33502 I just went through my closet for the second time and got rid of more than half my clothes again. It felt really good! Good luck in your consult!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
