Did anyone dip under a BMI of 40 during their pre op diet?

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I'm currently awaiting insurance approval. My BMI at time of submission to insurance was 42 or 43. I'm easing into my preop diet now, but I'm worried that by time of surgery my BMI may go under 40. My question is, if insurance approves surgery and you go below 40 BMI prior to surgery, will there be any issues with insurance paying for the surgery?

Thanks!

It depends on the insurance company if they approve based on initial weight. My doctor advised me to only lose 1 lb per month to avoid going below 40. However, you are beyond that point. Feel free to knock down weight while you are in the preop phase!

I never asked this question. My bmi was 40 when I started. I have lost about 15 lbs which made my bmi lower in the last 7 month. I have blue cross/ blue shield. The dr office never said anything about dropping under the BMI of 40

I will be sad if that happens.

Wow really?? The BMI is an insurance requirement but I never heard of a surgeon, after insurance approval, refusing to perform because of it.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
