Constipation (I can't believe this is my topic!)

Recommended Posts

So, I am now 5 days post op. Feeling pretty darn good. Stopped pain meds three days ago. My Fluid intake & exercise are where they need to be. Everything is great. EXCEPT, I can't . I have been taking Miralax for two days now and nothing. It's been five days...should I be worried? When do I call the doctor/nurse? We all , so I appreciate your sharing.

It isn't time to worry, but time to take action. Get an enema. Immediate results while figuring out which oral med will work. I did an enema every two days for the first two weeks until I could start Fiber. My GI doc approved because it is just so important to not get impacted. I'm 6 weeks out and don't have trouble now because of the fiber.

Thanks! I'll give my doctor a call on Monday! Here's hoping to healthy for everyone!

The oral meds I was talking about are Milk of Magnesia, Smooth Move tea (I found it in the tea isle of my local grocery), and the Miralax. All over the counter.

Good luck!

Definitely get your doctor's/nurse's advice but this is what mine had me do in that situation: 1) one tablespoon of milk of magnesia every hour for up to five hours 2) take a stool softener (I now take one daily before bed) 3) add benefiber (or similar) to my daily routine. I use the dissolvable powder in one of my bottles of Water each day. 4) make sure you're drinking the amount of water they have told you to drink each day (my dr.'s requirement is 64 oz/day)

I've added a spinach and fruit smoothie to my diet. I don't have to take anything anymore! (2oz spinach, 1/2 banana, 1/2 cup berries, coconut water).

I was in the ER for impaction. Not fun. Good luck to you.

If you are on a liquid diet... you really don't have much poop being made. Honestly, if you are at least having some gas, you should be fine. I didn't have a bowel movement for something like 8 days after surgery...and even then, it was just a little bit. Give it time. As you change your diet, your body should respond accordingly

Ideally there will be a BM by 5 days post op, and at least every 3 days thereafter. Even if you're not eating, the body still makes waste. If that waste stays in there for multiple days, it will start putrifying, getting reabsorbed, and drying out. In short: nothing good.

I did an enema every two days for the 2nd and 3rd weeks post op until I could get fiber on board. This is not harmful for just a few weeks, but impaction IS very harmful.

I visited a gastroenterologist my 3rd week post op, and told them about the enemas. They were just fine with it, they just wanted to make sure I was GOING.

Now, there is a difference between doing this for 2-3 weeks, and doing it for months. It is good to move to dietary management, fiber supplements, and the like.

Even milk of magnesia, miralax, and Smooth Move tea shouldn't be used forever. But that's something that should be discussed with your doc.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
