How will I take my pills?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know how we're supposed to take pills post-op? I currently take a few, and my doctor says I can crush them up. However, if I'm on a liquid diet after the surgery, what can I mix the pills into? Additional question: If the pills require to be taken on a full stomach, what will I do about that, as my stomach will definitely not be full?

The reason for liquid at the start instead of solids is so you don't damage your sleeve causing a leak. Medicine is not like solid food. Just don't crush up time-release medication unless given the okay to do it.

I take metformin (fast acting, very large circular pills), cutting it into halves, and while it's still rather large even in halves, it causes no problems. If it requires a full stomach (I know some must be taken with food so as not to cause nausea, but never heard of full stomach), just take it with food. If you get nausea anyways, ask about taking an anti-nausea medication.

I had to get my medicine changed for the reason of not eating a regular meal.

You can add it to pudding. That's what I was told to do. It turns into a liquid in your mouth. But to be safe talk to your surgeon.

My doc told me to split the pill in half and take with Water. Been working fine so far. I'm 5 daddy's post op.

Thanks, everyone, for your feedback. (The "daddy" comment was funny!)

I found the best way is to crush and add to either orange juice or apple juice. Mine tasted horrible in pudding & yogurt.

Why are you drinking juices, they are so full of sugar?

It's been over a year, but I put mine in sugar-free cranberry cocktail. Just a shot glass... It was horrible, but I recently discovered there was one pill (gabapentin) that made it awful.
I'm off of all meds now, just Vitamins and supplements. Gabapentin was the last one to go, and I bit into the capsule and found out it was awful.
All the others I've chewed before no problem. I took a lot. My surgeon didn't expect me to get off of all meds. At my one year follow up with him I think he was more pleased than I was (I'd had time to get used to the idea)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
