Gagging and throwing up

Recommended Posts

So I'm 1 month and 4 days since gastric sleeve surgery. I feel like I've posted so much on here, so my apologies. But I am having the hardest time!

i have now started to gag after anything I drink or eat. Most of the time it ends with vomiting after gagging myself to that point. When I vomit, it's mostly just spit, if I eat it's the food I ate, but I've been also throwing up just lumps of thick foam.

Does anyone know what's happening? I just keep having struggles.

Thanks y'all!:)

Oh, I'm so sorry. That sounds truly awful! I hope you get a proper answer soon, but I'll throw something out from what I read in the past. Could it be that your sleeve is too small or tightened at some point after surgery? I feel like I'll end up walking this fine line of not overeating but not under eating so the sleeve doesn't get narrow.

I had the same issue around the same timeframe. It reminded me of being pregnant with morning sickness! My NUT assured me that i was still healing and that at my 6 month mark, i would be a completely different person and feel a million times better. Hard to hear when you feel so crappy. I had to just take it day by day and tell myself it will end. After about a month and half, it was like a light switch and it was completely done. Havent been nauseous or vomited since. That was 5 months ago! Make sure you rule out any true issues with your doctor first though!

No need to apologize for posting often! Support is why we're here! That said, have you talked with your surgical team about this? I can't imagine they'd want you throwing up all the time. Good luck!

I called my dr yesterday for same reason, at nearly 6 weeks nausea just hit me like a plague, no committing though. He told me to ensure I'm getting my liquids in and taking something for Constipation.

Normally white foam means something could be stuck and causing spit to foam, had that when pregnant and it was a PITA.
If it does get worse or continue then request a scope to be done to ensure throat is clear and no blockage at entrance to stomach.

Wish you the best

I had that issue the first couple of days after surgery and every sip I took made me gag or vomit. I started taking super small sips and waiting 45-60 secs before the next and it helped tremendously. Once I was able to keep fluids down I did so much better and the vomiting stopped. Sometimes vomiting on an empty stomach makes bile come up which could also be what is happening.

Also Prilosec helped a lot and I can tell the difference if I don't take it in the morning before eating or drinking anything. My surgeon requires me to take it for three months but my gastro doc had started me on it a while ago for GERD. He says it also helps the stomach heal. If you don't take a proton pump inhibitor (Prilosec, Zantac, etc) I would definitely ask your doctor about it.

Hope this helps and if not at a minimum I would call your Dr's office or a nurse line cause they will have more insight. Good luck!!!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
