How do you know when you are full

Recommended Posts

Hi all! I am still struggling with identifying the "full" feeling. I start to get what feels like gas to be and/or I have to burp and I stop. I am 4 weeks post op and I was just bumped from 2oz of Protein to 3oz and I am stopping before the 3 which I know is ok. I have a big fear of stretching my stomach. Was hoping others can share how they know they are full. Thanks

I will be 4 weeks on Monday. I have to admit I don't weigh what I eat but definitely use common sense.

I get that same pressure or gas feeling when having food and after I burp it goes away.

I know I'm full when that harmless gas in the form of a burp seems to carry the taste or the food I'm having. That's definitely an indicator that you've reached your limit.

It's better to avoid this but every now and then it happens to me.

I am really curious how that will work out for me as well. I'm 4 days out of surgery and it's hard to know when to take the next sip of Protein Shake.

Believe me it gets easier! The first two weeks you think how can I get everything in!?! You start to listen to your body and get the timing down. I know I pretty much do something every two hours, Protein shake-eat-protein shake- repeat until the day is up.

I don't focus on feeling full. I focus on eating specified amounts of food (e.g., 3 oz of lean Protein with 1 oz of green Beans, or 4 oz of cottage cheese). I estimate my stomach capacity to be about 6 oz, so I never get close to being "full."

I also weigh anything and everything that goes into my body. I've been doing it since 6 months before my surgery and I imagine that it is something that I will always do. I can't imagine that I would have had my success without my food scale.

Yea I weigh everything too but I don't want to force myself. Sometimes I think I am full before the amount I am supposed to eat and my doctor says watch for the cues. I am not sure how to know.

I usually start to get a pressure in my chest. Sometimes I deep breathe and feel it getting tight- that's when I know to either slow down or take my last bite. I don't weigh anything due to only being allowed one egg a day, however next week I get to start more Proteins.

Once you eat, you will know your limit. I am only 3 weeks out so I am also experimenting. Good luck!

I'm 3 days out and this is where I'm at. Also, if I drink 2 ounces of my Protein Shake, how soon after does that start to move out of the stomach so I can sip Water? It's so hard to judge when I have no gauge for fullness, hungry, or thirsty.

It's so bizarre, but a good bizarre.

I'm 4 months out. I burp when I'm hungry AND I burp when I'm full. If you can't fit more than 3 oz of food before you burp, just stop eating. Remember that you can always finish it later on. Tightness in the chest, burping, hiccups, and unconsciously putting your fork completely down for a few seconds/ unconsciously reaching for a drink (even though you don't because you remember that you can't drink for 30 min) are all indicators of fullness.

Remember that your pouch is actually right under the boob. It's not as low as I thought lol. If you feel your tummy hurt closer to your navel, it's going on in your intestines and not your stomach. Eat super slow, and if you can't get used to that, then keep weighing everything! I usually just see how much food will fit in a 1/2 cup container and going that because I don't have a scale.< /p>

Hope this helps :-)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
