I am a 55-year-old woman who lost my left leg -- and much of my mobility -- due to trauma. In the years since, I've struggled terribly with my weight. I've always had weight problems, but balanced them out with healthy exercise, healthy food, and proper medical diagnosis of several metabolic disorders, including Hashimoto's hypothyroidism, hypoandrogenism, and poly cystic ovarian syndrome.

Several years later.... I'm in full-blown menopause and I've gained close to forty pounds since my amputation. Because of that, I basically spend all my time in a wheelchair. I CANNOT GET THE WEIGHT OFF. So I decided to do a gastric sleeve. My surgeon advised me that the surgery will help me shed enough weight to regain my mobility and may even reset my metabolism to make it easier to keep the weight off in the future.

I am reaching out to any other amputee gastric sleeve patients who might be out there. My surgery is about a month away, and I would really benefit from some realistic advice about walking after surgery, mobility, etc. I'd love to hear from you. Thanks,

SusitaNM

While not an amputee, I do have many disabilities that make finding an exercise routine challenging.

As exercise is crucial for losing/maintaining I got a script for PT, so they could teach me a routing that I could do at home. Maybe something to look into.

I am also an amputee (right leg above the knee) due to a car accident 24 years ago when I was 23 years old.
I am scheduled for gastric bypass on April 11th.
My weight was not a problem until after I had my second daughter at age 40. I had such a hard time losing my pregnancy weight. It was a vicious cycle. The more weight I gained, the harder it was to get around with my prosthesis. The less I walked, the more weight I gained.
Finally, I decided that weight loss surgery was my best option.
I am hoping to lose 60 pounds.
I would love to hear how things went for you and how you think being an amputee affected your experience.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
