I haven't been able to get the vitamins yet

Recommended Posts

I am almost 4 weeks post-op and I haven't started taking the Vitamins yet because I can't afford them. Can anyone tell me through consequences. Also I was told that Protein Shakes can't be used but I have read the some of you do, is there a cretain reason why I shouldn't. Everything I eat or drink anything my stomach hurts any suggestions. All I have eaten is mashed potatoes, applesauce, sugar free pudding, cottage cheese aND just started a slice of toast and crumbled sausage. Just a very small amount at a time, is this normal. Sorry for all of the questions. Thanks everyone.

That nutrition will slow your recovery.

Get some Protein Shakes, they have them at Walmart, Get something with less than 5 grams of sugar. Premier is the best you are going to find at walmart.

Get Vitamins, any Vitamin that is not a Gummy. You can't get vitamins as a script from your Dr? Where did you have surgery? Have you been to any follow up visits?

Why can't you have Protein shakes? Stop eating mashed potatoes, they have zero nutiritonal value. Apple sauce is just sugar. The cottage cheese is a good choice.

You need Protein.

Milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, eggs, Beans, Peanut Butter, meat, fish, tofu, etc.

Any Vitamins is better than none. Flintstones chewable complete (you need the iron) or the like.

If money is an issue and you are in the US, go to social services and apply for assistance.

Do you have insurance? Did you go through insurance for surgery? If so, go to http://www.insurenutrition.com/category_list.php?parent_id=24&cid=28 and see if your insurance will cover the Protein Shakes. They also have some Vitamins you can get as well. I got Premier Protein and Vitamin D with folic acid covered by insurance.

Check out this website for bariatric vitamins. Says that most people get all the vitamins they need for $25 or less. https://www.nascobal.com/patient/why-nutrition-direct

Hope this helps!!!

The long term consequences of not taking the Multi-Vitamin, Iron, B12, and Calcium as a RNY patient are severe.

The most common deficiencies are Vitamin B12, folate, zinc, iron, copper, calcium, and vitamin D and can lead to secondary problems, such as osteoporosis, Wernicke encephalopathy, anemia, and peripheral neuropathy.6 There has also been reports of teeth breakage in people who slack off on their vitamin regimen.

You cannot afford a $7 bottle of Centrum chewable vitamins that will last approximately three months?

Do not get me wrong. I do not intend to come across as harsh at all. However, I also do not understand how an individual could undergo a malabsorptive bariatric surgery such as a roux-en-y gastric bypass that requires lifelong aftercare without being able to afford the costs associated with the aftercare.

Ditch the applesauce, toast, and mashed potatoes. High-glycemic carbohydrates that are devoid of much Protein should be avoided by someone who is less than four weeks post-op.

I got my Vitamins through my surgeon but they also recommended Centrum chewable $8, B12 sublingual $6 and the Wellesse Calcium & D3 $7. That's what I was taking pre-op. Switched to the Rx ones post-op.

If someone had surgery on Medicaid, and all they had was food stamps, I can see how they wouldn't be able to afford Vitamins.

Still they should be able to get a script for vitamins and get them free.

I have never used food stamps but do Proteins shakes count as food? The pre-made?

May depend on the state. In Texas I don't think they can.

I live in Dallas. Have you priced the vitamins at Kroger? They typically have most of the required vitamins BOGO everyday.

In Illinois you can buy pre made Protein Shakes with food stamps, I think you can buy Protein Powder too. It seems you can buy any type of "food" that isn't hot and ready to eat.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
