6 months post op caloric intake

Recommended Posts

I am 6 months post op and supposed to be getting about 900 calories, however, I am not even coming close to it. I get anywhere from 270 to about 500 calories (If I am lucky). This even includes the calories from Vitamins and supplements. How is everyone hitting their calorie intake goals?

I was at about 1200 calories per day at 6 months, and now, at 7 months, I am closer to 1300 calories per day. I eat 7-8 times per day, about 2 hours apart. I was eating more than 500 calories within a few weeks post. In fact, looking over my food journal, I was averaging about 800 calories per day at 1 month post-op.

I have to ask, how are you meeting your Protein goals on such few calories? Are you still using shakes a lot?

I don't meet my Protein goals either. I am supposed to be at 90 grams and don't even come close at all. I meet with a nutritionist next month

You have to meet those goals, even if you eat very small meals multiple times per day. You don't want your body to get used to such low calorie totals over a sustained period of time.

Do you find that you're not hungry? I am having a hard time imagining anyone at this stage of the game existing on sub-500 calories per day. How much Water are you drinking every day?

I am not very hungry at all. I don't find myself very thirsty either. I drink maybe 24oz to 32oz daily but not dehydrated at all. I was like that before surgery. Yesterday I only got about 270 calories. The day before was about 340 or so.

If I drank that little, I would be dehydrated. Absolutely.

My advice is to call your team and set up an appointment with the surgeon or his NP as soon as possible. You need to talk to them about your seriously low calorie intake and your issues meeting the Protein and Water goals.

Good luck!

They want me to document what I eat for a month and I go back go back in the 10th and meet with his PA and the NUT. Just seeing what I could get for ideas till then. I just don't eat much because when I do I feel sick. I have meal reminders and everything on my phone, just not hungry. And my portions when I do eat are small.

Sustained low caloric consumption will result in heart failure. Get some help asap.

So you're saying that they know that you have days, at 6 months post-op, that you consume less than 300 calories? And they still want you to wait and come in? Wow. Just when I think that I have heard it all on here...

If eating is problematic, then at least sip on Protein Shakes all day. That way you can at least get some nourishment in your body.

I really do wish you the best.

As bad as it sounds I try to find foods that are high in calories just to get my intake up, but I can never eat the serving size. Or it is too high in fat. So I don't want to make myself sick because I am one of those people that get dumping syndrome with the sleeve. So I really have to watch what I eat. I can't have very much carbs or anything like that or I get very sick.

I'm 4 months out and my NUT said she wanted me above 1000 calories a day already, she said that continued low caloric intake is dangerous

So you still aren't really answering the question, what do you eat each day to get your calories??

If you are actually eating food, there are ways to get calories and healthy fats and from food.

Eggs, turkey bacon, avocado, turkey pepperoni, cheese, yogurt, strawberries, blueberries, spinach, tuna, salmon, mahi mahi, chicken, cauliflower, Soups, Beans, nuts (almonds, cashews, pistachios) and cottage cheese are just to name a few. These are still easy on the tummy and even in super small amounts you should be able to tolerate or you have some issues that need to be addressed with the doctor ASAP.

People don't understand that if you just drink liquids over an extended period of time it will be exceptionally difficult to start eating solid food again. I'm 3 months out and can't eat a whole serving size either but I work on it all day long. In order to get my calories in some days I HAVE to eat when I'm not hungry. I can't even finish 5.3 oz of yogurt but I put the rest in the fridge and finish it later. You need to eat when your phone reminds you and you absolutely need the protein! Get the unflavored kind that you can mix with your foods if you can't drink it. If you starve yourself it will continue to be difficult to eat and symptoms like dumping will be exaggerated because your body isn't used to it. If you eat small amounts of foods throughout the day you can retrain your body to tolerate solids and fatty food more comfortably.

Good luck and I hope the NUT can help you find a plan that works.

I eat chicken, shrimp, avocado, potatoes, salmon, asparagus, lean ground turkey, eggs, etc. I try to stay away from dairy due lactose intolerance. I am just still very restricted on the amount I can eat obviously. I have tried making myself eat when I am not hungry and feel very nauseous after. Even if it isn't much of anything. I am hoping the NUT can really help with some of this.

You need to get some fat in your diet too. With as little as you are eating, I would concentrate on eating foods regardless of fat or carbs. I wouldn't eat crap food but things like Beans, beef, bacon, sausage. You are setting yourself up for health problems. Take care of yourself. :)

I think you need to see your NUT because this doesn't sound right. You may have a stricture if you can't eat that much. I'd seek help fast especially at 6months out.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
