COFFEE - How soon did you have it?

Recommended Posts

it seems like I could start having Decaf a month or so out. I had to wait six months before starting back on caffeinated, and we were limited to 1-2 cups a day (decaf was unlimited, though). Surgeons vary quite a bit on this, though. Some allow caffeinated coffee right away - others ban it for life.

It was days after surgery before I had my first sip. Start with a sip. See how you tolerate it. If you tolerate it well, have a little more. If you don't tolerate it well, you're not ready. Try again a week or so later. Good luck!

I had a Decaf small black coffee from Mcdonalds, no cream and 2 stevia packets 3 days after surgery. I wanted to release some of the gas in my stomach and use the bathroom and it worked. It was the best cup of coffee I have ever had.

I was allowed Decaf right away, even in hospital. Caffeine, never.

This will be the hardest part for me lol. Carbs and sugar; everything else will be missed of course but my coffee... that will be very hard for me. My nutritionist said a month, I will need to follow what ever my surgeon says too of course. I don't care for carbonated drinks, so I'm fine there. I may just need to try to use Decaf as much as possible :/

I was told that coffee (caffeinated & decaf) can cause gastric ulcers so it's best to stop drinking it post WLS. Instead, drink green tea (with or without caffeine) as multiple research studies shows it helps with weight loss and prevents gastric ulcers.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
