More sleeves than pouches?

Recommended Posts

Is it me or does there seem to be more sleeves on this forum than pouches?

I believe so. At least there are about twice as many sleeves as bypasses performed in the US nowadays.

Is a pouch bypass? I choose a sleeve due to the maintenance involved with bypass, plus I felt it was to drastic.

RNY is just kind of outdated. It is like how they used to wire jaws shut. They have been doing more sleeves in Europe and the rest if the world for years, The US is way behind.

The majority of Drs pushing them still are doing it because it is the surgery they have the most experience with or for the money.

That isn't to say that some people don't medically need RNY over sleeves because there are certainly people that can benefit from RNY over the sleeve, like GERD patients.

Eventually there will be another development and the sleeve will be outdated.

Sleeves the new lap band fad

Sleeves aren't a fad, they're a clinically proven option for weight loss surgery.

I'm having RNY. I have severe GERD, that causes me to sleep on my couch in an upright position. I actually chose the RNY even before knowing about the sleeve. I have noticed that the sleeve is more commonly done now, but I was told that if I did a sleeve, I would most likely have to have a revision to the RNY. So, I decided to just do RNY and skip having more surgery.

Yes ik they are a proven weight loss, I'm an RN on a surgical floor and I care for these ppl everyday...I meant fad as they are the "new" weight loss option being pushed by surgeons like the Lapband was years ago but it has faded out in my area (which is a large hospital in PA.) many surgeons refuse to do Lapbands and GERD pts will hardly ever get a recommendation for a sleeve here.

One of the major reasons I will do nothing but RNY is due to the revision rate. Both band AND sleeve are both revised to bypass. It is still the gold standard Bariatric surgery and comes with the most research. They have also greatly improved their methods to help with the severe malabsorption that used to happen even a decade ago. I only want one surgery and this is the one that seems so tried and true.

Yes, the pouch is the gastric bypass.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
