Four Days Post-Op - HELP!!

Recommended Posts

So..... Pretty sure I'm not getting enough fluids but stomach feels like a beach ball is moving in there every time I drink something. I haven't slept (posting this at 3 am Houston time), my laparoscopic incisions seem to be swelling. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

You sound like there is still a lot of gas. Stand up while you drink, and walk a bunch. Do you have the spirometer? (Lung exerciser) How has that been going? My lungs got rid of most of my excess gas.

You need to sleep. I liked having a bunch of pillows surrounding me the first week.

I had to sleep upright in a recliner first two weeks because of acid reflux and gas... it's common to have a lot of gas. Are you walking s little to see if it is?

I am walking. I'll try to increase that too. I probably need to start using the "spirometer" more. Haven't used that since the hospital.

If it's gas then walk as much as possible but also try some warm peppermint tea as that really helped me.
As for incision swelling -- if they are then you need to see a doctor incase of infection etc.

We aren't given exercises or the spirometer to do, basic common sense with walking, exercise and fluids does it unless your lungs are under watch by specialist.

I'm a week post op and have been very lucky with no issues and can even sleep on my belly now.

Wishing you all the best and fast healing possible.

I used the spirometer until I could consistently get the ball(s) where they need to be (around 4 days out for me, but might take a week for someone that isn't out moving a lot). If you hear snap, crackle, and pop in your breathing, it means there is still air trapped in your lung tissues.

Infected incisions will have increasing redness, warmth, possibly bad smell and drainage. Also keep an eye on your temperature. Temps above 101F are cause for concern.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
