Gastric surgery after having total thyroidectomy

Recommended Posts

Have any if you had the surgery with thyroid problems? I've just started the process for gastric surgery. In December of 2015 I had to have my thyroid removed for large non cancerous nodules. When I met with the Dr for the first time and told him I wanted the sleeve, he pointed out that with the amount of weight the charts say I need to lose, I may not lose it all with the sleeve.

My main concerns and reasons for wanting the sleeve and not the bypass are the malabsorption and dumping syndrome. Since I'm totally dependent on Synyhroid, I'm not willing to chance those side effects. If I were to have the side effects, I wouldn't be getting adequate thyroid hormone and feel like that will totally negate any success I could have.

Does anyone have any experience with this issue? I'd greatly appreciate the input.

I have hashimoto thyroiditis and I guess my doctors must think that the malabsorption won't affect the hormone replacement because that's the surgery I'm getting and I dont think they would it if that was an issue?

How much weight do you have to lose?

I had a total thyroidectomy in 2014 due to Graves Disease. Had Bypass 4/2015 and have lost ~145#. I don't feel my lack of thyroid or synthroid dose affected my weight loss. I do wonder if it has anything to do with trouble losing this last 15-20#, but I don't stress over it. I'm thrilled with my results.

My endo didn't see a point in adjusting my meds with my weight loss-- my levels have been stable so I just keep in taking it. (175mcg)

My stats were/are:
High weight 337
Surgery weight 315
Current: 193
Height 5'6.6"

Sleeve is a good choice unless you already suffer from GERD, or have severe food addiction.

I had my thyroid removed in 2005. I had gastric bypass in November 2106. I'm dependent on the medicine also. I haven't had any issues however my GP said that my dose may need to be decreased as I lose weight.

Glad you have had success. Did you have trouble keeping your thyroid levels normal at any time...... More trouble than usual that is

I do have to say that in the past I have lost about 80 pounds on my own and started experiencing heart palpitations and extreme anxiety. Later I figured out that my dosage should have been decreased. Make sure your doctor keeps a close eye on it. I have also been wondering if the medication is able to be crushed because they said you should only take crushed pills immediately after the surgery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
