How Many Fat Grams

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I'm four months out right now and my dietician told me to not worry about calories, etc. but to focus on Protein and Water goals.

At my surgery follow up yesterday the nurse told me to stay under 25 grams of fat. I'm curious what everyone else is doing. I feel like 25 grams is low since I have to push protein.

Based on the nurses comment I'm trying to give up cheese and only eat low fat cheese 2-3 times per week and start watching my fat content more closely.

I mainly eat chicken, fish and avocado. I'm half way through my day today and I'm already at 25 grams of fat.

I am going to make an appointment with the dietician but I would like to hear your thoughts.

I feel like there is frequently a disconnect between my doctors office and dietician so it can be very confusing. Ultimately I know it is what works best for me and my body.

I am almost 7 months post op, and I rarely eat over 25 grams of fat. My high days are about 30-33 and regular days are closer to 20,

I was sleeved two years ago. I lost all my excess weight, so take my words and apply them as you wish.

I never counted fat grams. The only two things I ever paid attention to were/are grams of Protein and ounces of fluids consumed. Fat provided me with a feeling of satiety and fullness during my weight loss phase, so I did not cut back on it.

Contrary to popular beliefs, dietary fat does not make people fat.

I generally believe what @Introversion said even though I am preop and can't give experience for post-op.

Is the nurse part of the bariatric team? I know there is still the holdover on the fat thing in the medical community, but fat provides satiety and keeps carb cravings at bay. Are you still losing?

I don't see a reason the be under that amount unless you have certain comorbidites that you need to be on a low fat diet in general.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
