How long is the hospital stay

Recommended Posts

I was supposed to stay one night and be released the next day. However, I opted to stay an extra night due to how horrible I felt due to my gas pains.

I was scheduled for 2 but ended up staying for 3 nights. I was very nauseated and couldn't keep anything down

I spent one night and was discharged mid-morning the next day. I have heard everything from a same-day discharge to one night to two nights. YMMV.

I stayed two nights due to the nausea and vomiting.

I stayed two nights due to nausea and mild dehydration. I was sleeping so much that I wasn't getting in enough fluids. My surgeon threatened me with a third night, and that was the push I needed to start drinking more.

I stayed three nights due to the pain, low oxygen, sleepy bladder, and my inability to drink 40 oz in a day.

My surgeon keeps eveyone at least 1 night, sometimes 2.

There is a large surgery group in Dallas that releases it's patients the same day as surgery.

One night and released the next day. The key is to get up and walk (or shuffle) because this will help with the gas pains that inevitably come after surgery. Shuffle, shuffle, shuffle.

I was released the same day. Surgery at 8:30, home by 2pm.

Two nights in hospital. This was to ensure pain was controllable, that i could go to the toilet myself and also do a swallow test x-ray to ensure no ruptures or leakage.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
