How long before you returned to work?

Recommended Posts

So I made the first step today and called the surgeon's office. My insurance officially takes over January 1st of next year so I have a little bit of waiting time to go but they said I could fill out the paperwork. The woman who helped me was really nice and I'm really excited.

She said with my BMI I did not have to do the weight loss program but I do have to do the psychiatric evaluation.

I've heard some people say that they go back to work within one week but are not supposed to lift more than 10 pounds. I'm a teacher preschool and I'm wondering how long did it take or how long did they say for it take before you could go back to work? Has your doctor is giving you any advice of when you should go back?

Well I'm 3 weeks out & still have significant pain in one spot, so if you have a summer break & can avoid taking time off work that would be a good way to go.

I just hate to wait. I have spring break which is approximately week and a half

Which surgery are you having? There's probably diff recovery times for each. I had a gastric bypass & wouldn't have been ready to go back to work (I'm a nurse) til at least 3 weeks. Even @ 3 wks I still have pain, but work would be bearable. My surgeon took me out for 6wks.

Em-I am having the sleeve and am a preschool teacher. But i do have an assistant and possibly an additional aide. So I would be sending home now maybe the parents letting them know I'd be having surgery and to inform their kids and not to be jumping on me and she would be able to handle a lot of the work physically.

I'd say in a job that's physically and emotionally demanding like that, give yourself at least a couple weeks. Even if the kids aren't climbing all over you, you might be quite fatigued or in too much pain to be as patient as you'd like. Or alternately, it may be hard to deal with twenty ankle biters when you're also trying to eat every two hours and drink every half hour and count every gram of Protein etc.

I work from home as a writer and started taking assignments again at about a week and a half out, though I had myself on longer deadlines/reduced hours, so instead of doing my assignment in three eight hour days, I took six four hour days to turn it around instead.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
