So....surgery was yesterday! And man, did yesterday suck!! But now I'm home and feeling better today. I'm a bit worried that I have a slight fever, but Doc says it's ok as long as it stays below 101. Currently 99.4, so I guess I'm good for now. It's been near impossible to keep liquid without nausea. But I'm pushing it as I definitely don't want to be dehydrated. I will post my experience later. I would have loved to know specifics beforehand. I'm in vegas with Dr Atkinson whose procedures are almost completely different than most of the accounts I've read. Anyway....I'm firmly on this path now!!

May it only get easier for you!

I'm curious: how are Sr. Atkinson's procedures super different?

First, he doesn't require a pre op diet. Not even full liquid the day before surgery. Just advises to not have a large dinner. Then, there is no swallow test. Most of the blogs I've read the patient isn't allowed any liquid until the next day, after they pass a swallow test. He does a test during surgery to check for leaks, so you're given ice chips immediately after surgery. That night you're encouraged to try Jello, Water and a shake. These are good differences from others....as I'm pretty sure that pre op diet would have done me in. I'm 7 days post op, and feel pretty good. With the exception of head hunger and fatigue. But, both are manageable.

Sounds like normal surgery pre-op directions. That's pretty cool. And if it's working for all of his patients, then I wouldn't see why it couldn't work down the road. BUT, there are some, or many, who might need the longer pre-op diet with liquids and restricted foods. It makes good practice. Congrats on your surgery! Blessings to you.

Good for you your on your new journey to a new beginning. Hope you feel good real soon. How is the pain? Also you had the sleeve done?

Thank you [emoji4] Yes, I had the sleeve. The pain is almost nonexistent now. I can't do more than walk until two weeks out (5/1), so I anticipate a bit of pain to return, but for now....I feel just fine. Tired a lot, but no pain!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
