I am getting the duodenal switch done later this summer; my doctor ballparked August. I just recently started my 3-month pre-op diet period. I'm getting all my appointments taken care of in that time, and then we'll submit for approval and wait! My question is about getting a date. Do you just get one assigned to you? Can you say you can't do certain dates? Is there any input you get? I have a big weekend trip planned for the first weekend of August, and I am so nervous that my surgery will be scheduled for then. Of course my surgery is important to me, but this is too. Thanks for any experience/input!

Eh, this is America. The last time I checked no one was forced to do any surgery on a date they did not agree with. :)

Seriously though, the doctor and the hospital will work with you once approved for a date that fits your needs. In my case the Dr. had to give the insurance a firm date, but as long as it was within a certain period of the originally approved date, I believe it was 30 days, they had flexibility to reschedule.

How do I know this? I was checking my insurance online to see if the surgery was approved and noticed the surgery was scheduled for that day! Was confused so I called the Dr. and received the info I stated above.

Once I got insurance approval, I met with the scheduler and picked my own date. I had a work trip to plan around and it was no issue at all

I am an educator so I scheduled my surgery in the month of June. On the other hand, my sister's WLS date was given to her.

My doctors office asked me when I wanted to have my sleeve done...they told me my insurance approves faster when there is a date picked...I have Illinois Medicaid blue cross community health and picked July 26....just my 2 cents [emoji847]

I just got scheduled today. My center asked when I was thinking of doing surgery, and I said late May/Very early June. So they gave me 3-4 dates to choose from initially, and would have looked for more if any of those didn't work. I was able to schedule around all my work commitments and I chose a Wednesday so I could work up to my surgery date and start my PTO for the next week.

When you are ready to schedule I'm sure you will be able to say the time that would be best for you.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
