Hernia repair and Sleeve

Recommended Posts

I had my sleeve, a hernia repair and my gall bladder out at the same time.... no issues at all. My recover was the same as a sleeve alone. I went back to work after 3 weeks and am doing just fine. I took no narcotic pain meds and was up and out of bed quickly. Do realize that everyone is different but repairing a hernia is not uncommon during surgery.

I had a grade 3 para-esophageal hiatal hernia repaired at the time of my sleeve. At first my surgeon suggested RNY, but when I said I didn't want that he was fine with doing the sleeve. The surgery was quite a bit longer than is typical for the sleeve, but to me it felt like a bonus to get both at once. The first surgeon I saw for my hiatal hernia wanted to do an open incision surgery with a week in the hospital and 6 weeks home recovery. My bariatric surgeon did both and I was home in 2 days and back to work in 2 weeks!

I had a massive Hiata Hernia repair. I actually had my gallbladder out, hiatal hernia repair and VGS. Both the gallbladder and hernia doubled my surgery time. And my recovery was pretty long, like 12 weeks were for REALS. lol!

I was sleeved on 4/17 and they repaired a small hiatal hernia at that time. I didn't even know I had one!

I was sleeved on March 27. I had a hernia repair and my gallbladder out at the same time. I must have been lucky- I only had an additional 30 minutes on the table. I recovered at the same rate as my sleeve sisters.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
